Hyperconnected employees experiencing ‘dark side’ of digital work

Legacy education sees purchase of common stock worth $6,830 by Robert DeRoseThe usual rule of thumb is that stories sell; data, not so much. But new research suggests that’s not necessarily true. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that numbers are dull and uninspiring, numbers dominate our decisions — on what to buy, whom to hire and where to donate money. A paper published last month in the journal PNAS shows that numbers are so compelling that when making a decision, people will put more weight on relatively trivial attributes if they’re expressed numerically, factoring them in above more relevant information expressed in qualitative form. The researchers call the phenomenon “quantification fixation.” “I think it helps explain why there’s such a move to put a number on everything,” said Katherine Milkman, a professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and one of the authors of the paper. For example, think of online purchases — it’s so much easier to compare customer star ratings than to sort through a bunch of descriptive reviews. Right up top, Amazon gives you not just the average rating as a number and a graphic, but also gives you the number of ratings. The paper itself starts out with an impressive number — the researchers conducted 21 different experiments to bolster their conclusions and explore how quantification fixation works in different contexts. In one, volunteers were put in the position of a boss being asked to choose a summer intern. They were told two candidates were comparable in every way except one got a higher grade in management and the other, a higher grade in calculus. When they offered the calculus grade as a number, people tended to hire the candidate with the higher calculus grade, and when they switched and only offered the management grade as a number, the preference flipped. In another experiment, the researchers wanted to see if a fixation on numbers might nudge people to make unprofitable choices. So they asked volunteers again to play the employer and choose from prospective employees to assist them in a game. The winning pairs would get a cash reward. The prospective employees were scored in three skill areas — math, trivia and a geometric reasoning assessment called the angles test. People were again more likely to choose the candidate whose skills had been expressed as a number (rather than, say, as a bar graph with no numbers). They did this even when told that the numbered skill was less relevant to winning — and, as a result, those teams won less money. “I think it’s a brilliant paper,” said Ellen Peters, a former engineer turned psychologist at the University of Oregon. “The stereotype is that people hate numbers, so they’re going to run away from them,” she said. But this and other studies show people prefer using numbers to make decisions. Peters took part in a recent study that showed people were much more likely to share social media posts on climate change if they included numerical information. The numbers made people think the posts were more trustworthy, she said. There’s a lesson here for those of us trying to sell things, or get hired, or even to get elected. If there’s a quality you want people to value, put a number on it. If there’s something you’d rather people ignore, make it qualitative. Perhaps some degree of numeric fixation can explain why, when asked if they’re better off than they were four years ago, voters focus on what’s most quantifiable — the price they see on a carton of eggs. And there’s a lesson for making better decisions about where to spend our money. Do we really care about a 4.5 versus a 4.4? Or are we ignoring other important information — like whether an item suits our kitchen or our wardrobe? Sometimes we imbue more authority in numbers than they deserve. There are some caveats to the “quantification fixation.” Most people have poor intuition for big numbers, so when faced with the cost of a Mars mission or a foreign war, it all sounds expensive whether it adds up to $7 million or $270 billion, let alone anything in the trillions. And numbers don’t work to inspire compassion. Whether it’s deaths from cancer, COVID or natural disasters, people generally don’t muster more compassion for a million than they do for 100,000 or 10,000. But ratings are on the upswing. In the prescient 2010 novel “Super Sad True Love Story,” by Gary Shteyngart, a future somewhere in the 2020s has become so ratings-obsessed that every time the protagonist walked into a bar, other patrons used a smartphone-like device called an apparat to rate his hotness (always low) and his potential as a long-term mate. What follows is an all-too-plausible scenario of crass consumerism gone wild, economic collapse and terror when all the apparats stop working. The book only got 4 out of 5 Amazon stars, but don’t be turned off by that. It’s just a number.

Las Vegas quarterback Gardner Minshew is out for the season due to a broken collarbone, head coach Antonio Pierce confirmed on Monday, leaving the Raiders with a short week to determine their starter. Minshew suffered the injury when he was sacked and landed on his left shoulder late in the fourth quarter of Las Vegas' 29-19 home loss to the Denver Broncos. Former starter Aidan O'Connell, who was sidelined by a thumb injury in Week 7, could return off injured reserve in time for the Raiders (2-9) to face the two-time reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) on Friday in Kansas City. "We'll see if Aidan is good to go," Pierce said. "He's been ramping up." O'Connell entered the 21-day practice window on Monday as the Raiders determine when to activate him. "Seeing him able to grip the ball comfortable, hopefully, no pain there, and just being able to be efficient," Pierce said. "To put a player out there that's hurting or injured still, that's not to the benefit of the player or our team." O'Connell, 26, has played in four games this season, starting two (both losses). He is 52 of 82 (63.4 percent) for 455 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. As a rookie last season, O'Connell started 10 of 11 games, going 5-5, and completed 213 of 343 passes (62.1 percent) for 2,218 yards, 12 TDs and seven interceptions. The Raiders selected O'Connell in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. "Obviously at the quarterback position, you've got to be smart," Pierce said. "I think with Aidan, his future's much brighter looking ahead. ... I'll have to really rely on our doctors and medical staff." Desmond Ridder replaced Minshew and went 5 of 10 for 64 yards. Ridder, 25, has appeared in three games this season for Las Vegas and is 16 of 26 (61.5 percent) for 138 yards and one TD. Ridder played the previous two seasons for the Atlanta Falcons, who selected him in the third round of the 2022 draft. For his career, he is 338 of 529 (63.9 percent) for 3,682 yards, 15 TDs and 12 interceptions in 22 games (17 starts, 8-9 record). Minshew, 28, completed 25 of 42 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the Broncos. He finished his first season with the Raiders with 2,013 yards, nine TDs and 10 picks on 66.3 percent passing. He joined the Raiders in free agency after stints in Jacksonville (2019-20), Philadelphia (2021-22) and Indianapolis (2023) and won the starting job in camp. But he was benched multiple times for O'Connell as the Raiders struggled as a team. --Field Level MediaFirst trans US congresswoman already in Republican crosshairsGlobal Accounting Software Market: Key Trends, Market Share, Growth Drivers, And Forecast For 2024-2033

Nebraska women’s basketball player Callin Hake summed it up as well as anyone could. “I think in South Dakota we shot the crap out of it, which is awesome,” the guard from Minnesota said. On that night last weekend in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the Huskers made a school-record 20 3-pointers on 58% shooting beyond the arc in a 113-70 win against South Dakota. That was three more than the previous record, from 2010. Now comes another game against Creighton where the series at times has at times been defined by the 3-point line — both the ability to make and defend it. The 3-point line is something to watch closely again when the Huskers and Bluejays play at 4 p.m. Friday at Sokol Arena in Omaha, a few hours before the men’s teams from the same schools play at CHI Health Center Omaha. Last year, Morgan Maly made three 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the game and Creighton led the entire game while winning 79-74. Creighton didn’t keep its hot 3-point shooting going the entire game but made nine and outscored the Huskers by 18 points beyond the arc. Nebraska was 3-for-21 on 3-pointers. In 2022, Creighton blasted the Huskers 77-51 after making five of its first eight 3-pointers. “One thing I know is they (Creighton) all shoot it pretty well,” Nebraska coach Amy Williams said. “Last year we gave up eight made threes in the first quarter. That’s something we’ll have to shore up. They’re very, very good off the ball with their movement and cuts so you’re positioning really matters. We’ll have to make the hustle plays and not give them second-chance opportunities.” Creighton has won seven of the last eight meetings with the Huskers. The Bluejays are averaging 10.4 made threes per game during the stretch, while Nebraska is averaging 3.6. The 5-0 and 21st-ranked Huskers faced a major dose of adversity this week when sophomore forward Natalie Potts sustained a season-ending knee injury during Tuesday’s game against North Alabama. She’s scheduled for surgery in two weeks. Williams called the injury is “devastating.” “What a start she’s had to the season, leading our team in scoring and rebounding,” Williams said. “She worked really hard this offseason.” Creighton has reached the NCAA Tournament the past three seasons, making the Elite Eight in 2022, the first round in 2023 and the second round in 2024 with several of the same players that are on the team this year. Creighton may be the most experienced team the Huskers face all season, as the Bluejay playing rotation includes five graduate students, two seniors and two juniors. “We’re incredibly familiar with their roster, and they’re incredibly familiar with our roster,” Williams said. Creighton guard Lauren Jensen has already gone off this season, scoring a career-high 32 in an 80-72 win against Drake. She was 6-for-10 on threes and made each of her six two-point shots. One thing new to the series for Nebraska is Britt Prince, the freshman from Elkhorn North getting her first taste of playing against her hometown school. In the past two games combined, Prince is 15 for 21 shooting. She’s driving to the basket, and also shooting 3s. “She’s gotten more aggressive, and I’d like to see her be even more aggressive,” Williams said. The 113-70 win against South Dakota showed the Huskers what it can look like this season. The Huskers zipped passes around the perimeter to get lots of good 3-point chances. Nebraska had 33 assists on 41 field goals. Hake felt like a lot of inside-outside passes helped the Huskers to the fourth-best scoring total in program history. “When you have posts that are willing to kick it out and give you dimes for passes that makes shooting in a guard’s job a lot easier,” Hake said. “I think we really wanted to carry that forward. The Liberal candidate in a federal byelection in British Columbia says she is applying for Métis membership after a local group questioned her claims of Indigenous identity. Madison Fleischer says in a written statement that she self-identifies as Métis based on what she knows about her great-grandmother's heritage and is "collecting the necessary documentation to go through the application process" for citizenship with B.C.'s Métis Nation. In the meantime, Fleischer, who is the candidate in the Dec. 16 byelection in Cloverdale-Langley City, says she has removed "Métis" from her social media profile descriptions to ensure there is "no confusion" about her Indigenous status. Her response comes after the Waceya Métis Society — which describes itself as a chartered community representing Métis people in the Langley and White Rock regions of B.C.'s Lower Mainland — said in a release that it "wishes to distance itself from Madison’s claims of Métis identity." The society says it met with Fleischer over the weekend to discuss her claims of Métis identity but was "disappointed that she could not provide any evidence to support her Métis heritage." The attention on Fleischer comes after Edmonton Centre Liberal MP Randy Boissonnault left cabinet last week amid questions about his shifting claims of Indigenous heritage and his business dealings. In her statement, Fleischer says she has "always been vocal about not yet holding Métis Nation British Columbia citizenship." The Waceya Métis Society says it has asked Fleischer to "properly research and verify her Indigenous heritage before making any further public assertions." "In this meeting, Madison was unable to substantiate her claims with any documentation or historical connections to Métis communities," the society says about their Nov. 23 meeting with Fleischer. "The integrity of Métis identity is not to be taken lightly, especially in public office, where the representation of our community must be accurate, respectful, and legitimate." Cloverdale-Langley City was previously held by Liberal John Aldag, who resigned to run for MLA with the B.C. New Democrats. Aldag was defeated by B.C. Conservative candidate Harman Bhangu in the Langley-Abbotsford seat in the Oct. 19 provincial election. Fleischer, whose Liberal party biography calls her a small-business owner who operates a public relations firm in Langley, is going up against candidates including federal Conservative Tamara Jansen, who held the seat from 2019 to 2021 before losing a close race to Aldag. Chuck Chiang, The Canadian PressKansas remained solidly entrenched at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll Monday ahead of its showdown with No. 11 Duke in Las Vegas, while a pair of schools from the Magnolia State elbowed their way back into the rankings. Kansas center Hunter Dickinson (1) celebrates after dunking the ball during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against UNC Wilmington, Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, in Lawrence, Kan. Ole Miss returned to the poll at No. 23 while Mississippi State made its season debut at No. 25. The Jayhawks received 51 of 62 first-place votes from the national panel of media, putting them well ahead of two-time reigning national champion UConn, which was second with six first-place votes. Gonzaga was third with two first-place votes, Auburn was next with three, and Iowa State rounded out a top five that was unchanged from the previous week. There's a good chance for movement next week, though, with a host of high-profile matchups in holiday tournaments, and that matchup between the Jayhawks and Duke on Tuesday night in the Vegas Showdown. "Oh yeah, I've watched them," said Kansas coach Bill Self, who picked up his 800th career win by beating UNC Wilmington last week. "They're talented across the board. They're starting three freshmen, and everybody's going to talk about the one (Cooper Flagg), but the other two are potential lottery picks, if not lottery picks too." So do the Jayhawks, who have already beaten No. 12 North Carolina and Michigan State this season. Tennessee climbed four spots to No. 7 in this week's poll, followed by SEC rivals Kentucky and Alabama. Marquette was 10th after beating then-No. 6 Purdue and Georgia last week to reach 6-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Blue Devils and Tar Heels were followed by Purdue, which fell seven spots in the poll. Indiana and Wisconsin made it three straight Big Ten schools, while Cincinnati, Baylor, Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M rounded out the top 20. The last five were Creighton, Ole Miss, Arizona, Mississippi State and BYU. The Wildcats narrowly extended their run in the AP Top 25 to 61 weeks — the fourth-longest active streak in the nation — after back-to-back losses to Wisconsin and Duke. "We didn't play great," Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said after the loss to the Blue Devils, "so now we need to take a step back and figure out why. Are there some schematic problems? Are there some problems with how our personnel is kind of put together? And those are the things we're going to take a look at. I love the guys. I mean, I like the plan. But obviously when it's not going as well as you would like, you have to be honest with yourself and try to figure it out." Xavier returned to the poll for the first time since the final poll of the 2022-23 season ahead of its trip to the Fort Myers Tip-Off beginning Monday night. Ole Miss is back in the Top 25 after briefly dropping out, while Mississippi State is back after spending two weeks in the poll last November but just six weeks total over the past six years. Those three entered at the expense of Illinois, St. John's and Rutgers. The Illini lost to Alabama last week, while St. John's fell to Baylor and Georgia. Rutgers lost 79-77 at Kennesaw State, which beat a ranked team for the first time in school history. Marquette made the biggest climb this week, moving up five spots to No. 10. The Golden Eagles catch a breather this week with Stonehill and Western Carolina before back-to-back showdowns with No. 5 Iowa State and No. 15 Wisconsin. Purdue, Creighton and Arizona all dropped seven spots but remained in the poll. The Boilermakers lost to Marquette while the Bluejays lost to in-state rival Nebraska. The Wildcats dropped to 2-2, the first time they have been .500 at any point in a season since they were 3-3 to start the 2017-18 season. The SEC leads the way with nine of the Top 25 teams this week, including four in the top 10: Auburn, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. The Big 12 is next with six, including three of the first six in top-ranked Kansas, Iowa State and Houston. The Big East had four in the poll, the Big Ten three and the ACC two. UnitedHealth shooting dredges up enmity for health insurersNoneWhy do you think the Democrats lost the presidency this year? Was it inflation, immigration, sexism or foreign wars? We believe the answer is a lot simpler. In politics, President-elect Donald Trump has the strongest brand. Start with the baseball cap. It’s an aggressive red: the color of superhero capes, or the flag you wave in front of a bull. It has a four-word slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Or, simply, MAGA. More importantly, the cap stands for an idea: “America First.” It echoed through all of Trump’s messages, repeated over again. It is clear that, to many, America First means keeping immigrants out; shutting foreign products out; retreating from global commitments; and returning to the “American values” of gun rights, traditional masculinity and Trump-approved free speech. During the campaign, every time Trump said something crazy (“they’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats”) or staged a photo (at a McDonald’s drive-thru, in a garbage truck, at his Madison Square Garden rally), the message reinforced one of those brand pillars. His provocations weren’t gaffes — they were brand-building exercises. They kept fortifying the America First message. They kept building the MAGA brand. The red caps got attention and provoked an immediate response, both negative and positive. The brand was so strong, it papered over all the things so many Americans dislike about Trump personally. The one thing the brand couldn’t seemingly overcome happened in 2020, when a once-in-a-century pandemic hit. In contrast, what did Vice President Kamala Harris offer? Sadly, not much. The Democratic campaign themes were forgettable: “for the people;” “moving forward;” “turning the page;” and “we’re not going back.” Where was the message? What was the brand? The campaign focused on proposals that pleased policy wonks but never added up to a grander theme. The irony is, Democrats actually have a product people want: better health care, stronger safety nets, serious climate action — but having the better policy isn’t enough if you can’t sell it. The Democrats are selling policy papers; Trump sells a story. In our more than 40 years in the advertising business, working to come up with catchy slogans, we had a basic criterion: Can the message fit on a cap or a T-shirt? Is it a message anyone would wear? It’s not as if politicians haven’t discovered the value of branding over the years, but most of the best examples are on the Republican side: “I like Ike;” “it’s morning again in America” (for former President Ronald Reagan, written by San Francisco’s Hal Riney, who was our boss and mentor at the time); and “compassionate conservatism.” Former President Barack Obama’s slogans were less memorable, but at least “yes, we can,” and “change we can believe in” had some emotional resonance. Brands are powerful. Nike doesn’t sell shoes; it sells victory. Coca-Cola doesn’t sell soda; it sells happiness. MAGA doesn’t sell policies; it sells a vision of American renewal. Does anyone think former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would have received anything like the attention he got this year without the enduring strength of the Kennedy family brand? Look at history’s successful movements. The Nazis had their swastika and their salute. The peace movement has the dove and its symbol. The communists have a hammer and sickle. The civil rights movement has the raised fist. The LBGTQ+ rights movement has the pride flag. What symbols, what slogans, what baseball caps and T-shirts are instantly identifiable with the Democratic Party? There are, maybe, two — but they’re ancient. “The New Deal,” from 1932; and the donkey, from 1828 (and donkeys are thought of as stubborn and slow to change direction – draw your own conclusions). This election season, all the vibes, all the celebrity endorsements, all the “joy,” couldn’t compete with a great brand. Ten years from now we’ll look back and remember “Make America Great Again” — and not a single person will remember the slogans and promises of the Harris campaign. The Democratic Party needs to turn progressive values into a story worth telling, worth wearing, worth sharing. Until those candidates figure that out, they’ll keep bringing position papers to a brand fight. And they’ll keep losing. Kirk Citron, of Mill Valley, and Matt Haligman, of San Anselmo, are partners at Citron Haligman, an advertising agency based in Marin.

Former President Bill Clinton said this weekend he had a feeling “all the so-called swing states would vote together” during this past election, and he wasn’t surprised that Donald Trump won his bid for the presidency. “At least this time, there is no question that he actually won both the popular vote and the Electoral College,” Clinton said , referring to Trump losing the popular vote in 2016 when he faced Clinton’s wife, Democrat Hillary Clinton. In 2024, Trump won all seven swing states: Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada. In the interview with Jonathan Capehart that aired on MSNBC over the weekend, Clinton suggested “the late intervention” of FBI director James Comey’s investigation into his wife’s private email server she used while she was secretary of state helped Trump win. Hillary Clinton said last month in an interview that Vice President Kamala Harris had a better shot at the presidency than her because she didn’t have Comey “waiting in the wings to kneecap her.” That didn’t matter, however, for Harris, because she ultimately lost to Trump earlier this month. “There’s been a lot of change for people to digest,” Bill Clinton said, “a lot of economic adversity and upheaval, a lot of political upheaval, a lot of social developments. And if you think about it, some of the votes that happened in the last election are people who are just exhausted by uncertainty and tired of carrying it around. And that always helps the right.” Don't let this be the end of the free press. The free press is under attack — and America's future hangs in the balance. Gretchen McKay | (TNS) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Beans are kind of like the your best friend from high school — nearly forgotten but always ready to step back into the limelight and help out an old pal when needed. As gorgeously (and tantalizingly) demonstrated in Rancho Gordo’s new cookbook, “The Bean Book: 100 Recipes for Cooking with All Kinds of Beans” (Ten Speed, $35), beans are indeed a magical fruit, though not in the way you heard as a kid. Classified as both a vegetable and a plant-based protein in the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, beans and other legumes can be the ingredient you build an entire vegetarian or veggie-forward meal around. Or, they can help an economical cook stretch a dish twice as far with nutritious calories. A healthful and shelf-staple plant food — they last for years when dried — beans have been among a home cook’s most reliable pantry items for a very long time. (Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are thought to have been grown in Mexico more than 7,000 years ago.) That’s why, for some, they’re often something of an afterthought, especially if the only time you ate them as a kid was when your mom tossed kidney beans into a pot of beef chili or made baked beans (with brown sugar and bacon, please!) for a family cookout. Sales also peaked during the coronavirus pandemic, when shoppers stockpiled long-lasting pantry essentials. It wasn’t until Rancho Gordo, a California-based bean company, trotted out its branded packages of colorful heirloom beans that the plant began to take on cult status among some shoppers. Unlike the bean varieties commonly found in even the smallest grocery stores, heirloom beans are mostly forgotten varieties that were developed on a small scale for certain characteristics, with seeds from the best crops passed down through the generations. The result is beans that are fresher and more colorful than mass-produced beans, and come in different shapes and sizes. They also have a more complex and intense flavor, fans say. “The Bean Book” dishes up dozens of different ways to cook Rancho Gordo’s 50 heirloom bean varieties, which include red-streaked cranberry beans, mint-green flageolets, black and classic garbanzos and (my favorite) vaquero — which wear the same black-and-white spots as a Holstein cow. Other gotta-try varieties (if just for the name) include eye of the goat, European Soldier, Jacob’s Cattle and Good Mother Stallard, a purple bean with cream-colored flecks. “The very good news is that you have to work extra hard to mess up a pot of beans, and it’s not difficult to make an excellent pot,” Steve Sando writes in the book’s foreword. “The even better news is that you become a better cook with each pot you make.” Not convinced? Here are five reasons to jump on the bean bandwagon: Even the smallest grocery store will have a selection of dried and canned beans. Common varieties include black, cannellini (white kidney), Great Northern, pinto, navy, kidney, Lima and garbanzo (chickpea) beans. Even when they’re not on sale, beans are a bargain at the supermarket. Many varieties cost less than $1 a can, and dried beans are an economical way to build a menu. I paid $1.25 for a one-pound bag of cranberry beans, a smooth and velvety bean with a slightly nutty flavor, at my local grocery store. Rancho Gordo’s heirloom beans cost substantially more. (They run $6.25-$7.50 for a one-pound bag, with free shipping on orders over $50.) But they are sold within a year of harvest, which makes them more flavorful and tender. A bag also comes with cooking instructions and recipe suggestions, and the quality is outstanding. Plus, after cooking their beans with aromatics, “you are left with essentially free soup,” Sando writes in the cookbook. “If you drain properly cooked and seasoned beans, the liquid you are left with is delicious.” Beans are a great source of plant-based protein and both soluble and insoluble fiber, and they include essential minerals like iron, magnesium and potassium. If you’re watching your weight or following a particular diet, beans are naturally free of fat, sodium and cholesterol and are rich in complex carbohydrates. They also contain antioxidants and folate. And if you’re vegan or vegetarian, most types of dry beans are rich sources of iron. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating 1-3 cups of legumes, including beans, per week Dry beans have to be soaked overnight, but cooking them is easy. They can be cooked on the stovetop, in a slow cooker, in the pressure cooker and in the oven. Canned beans are even easier — just rinse and drain, and they’re ready to go. Beans can be used in so many different dishes. They can be made into soup, salad or dips, top nachos, add some heft to a casserole or be mashed into the makings of a veggie burger. You also can add them to brownies and other baked goods, toss them with pasta, add them to chili or a rice bowl or stuff them into a taco or burrito. Check out these four recipes: PG tested This light and creamy vegetarian soup benefits from a surprising garnish, roasted shiitake mushrooms, which taste exactly like bacon. For soup 1/4 cup olive oil 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 medium carrot, scrubbed and chopped 6 garlic cloves, finely grated or pressed 2 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 4 cups vegetable broth 2 15-ounce cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed For bacon 8 ounces shiitake mushrooms, caps cut into 1/8 -inch slices 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoons fine sea salt To finish Plant-based milk Chili oil, for drizzling Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Make soup: In large pot, heat oil over medium heat until it shimmers. Add onion, celery, carrot, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are fragrant and tender, 8-10 minutes. Add vegetable stock and beans, increase heat to high and bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until thickened, 12-14 minutes. Meanwhile, make the bacon: Spread shiitake mushrooms into a single layer on a sheet pan, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Bake until browned and crispy, 18-20 minutes, rotating pan front to back and tossing mushrooms with a spatula halfway through. Let cool in pan; mushrooms will continue to crisp as they cool. To finish, add some milk to the soup and use an immersion blender to puree it in the pot, or puree in a blender. (Cover lid with a clean kitchen towel.) Taste and season with more salt and pepper if needed. Divide soup among bowls and top with shiitake bacon. Garnish with thyme sprigs and a drizzle of chili oil. Serves 6. — “The Bean Book: 100 Recipes for Cooking with All Kinds of Beans” by Steve Sando PG tested Beans and seafood might seen like an unusual pairing, but in this recipe, mild white beans take on a lot of flavor from clams. Spanish chorizo adds a nice contrast. 4 cups cooked white beans, bean broth reserved 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 white onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1/2 cup finely chopped Spanish-style cured chorizo 2 plum tomatoes, chopped 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 pounds small clams, scrubbed well Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish Country-style bread and butter, for serving In large pot, heat beans in their broth over medium-low heat. In large lidded saucepan, warm olive oil over medium-low heat. Add onion, garlic and salt and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add chorizo and cook gently until some of the fat has rendered, about 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and wine and cook to allow the flavors to mingle, 5-6 minutes. Increase heat to medium and add clams. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally. Uncover the pan and cook until all of the clams open, another few minutes. Remove pan from heat, then remove and discard any clams that failed to open. Add clam mixture to the bean pot and stir very gently until well mixed. Simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to mingle but not get mushy. Ladle into large, shallow bowls and sprinkle with parsley. Set out a large bowl for discarded shells and encourage guests to eat with their fingers. The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 13 contest against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. However, Purdy remained highly limited, observing the rest of the session as the other quarterbacks took reps. Offensive lineman Dominick Puni and defensive tackle Kevin Givens were also limited due to injuries. Several key players, including defensive end Nick Bosa, left tackle Trent Williams, and running back Christian McCaffrey, missed Wednesday's session entirely. It's feeling a lot better. I still need to get better before I'm ready to go, so this week will be big, and I'll know a lot more in the next couple of days." Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, who injured his knee in a collision during Sunday's game, also did not practice. However, the team remains optimistic that he will be available for this weekend's matchup against the Bills. " He can't go today, " head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "But no, we're not ruling him out for this week. Hopefully, he'll be able to go tomorrow." Additionally, offensive lineman Aaron Banks and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott remain in the NFL's concussion protocol and did not participate in practice. In her Christmas message to Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina also highlighted“growing hatred” and“persecution of minority communities” in Bangladesh, calling on her countrymen to work towards achieving a“society rooted in tolerance.” In a post on Awami League's social media handle on X, Sheikh Hasina said,“The ideals, teachings, and messages of Jesus Christ reflect his philosophy of humanity and love. His life demonstrated the virtues of forgiveness, magnanimity, and the pursuit of a better world for all." Communal harmony is at risk, and it is imperative that we safeguard our nation from these divisive forces by building a humane society.” “Christmas arrives every year with messages of brotherhood, love, compassion, and generosity. Let us strive to illuminate our lives with the greatness of his sacrifice and work towards a society rooted in love, tolerance, and empathy.” And signs off with“Joy Bangla. Joy Bangabandhu. 1960s era red brick houses at Kirrawee, priced around $1.5 million, are in big demand, Alyssa Earley has found. or signup to continue reading The Ray White Sutherland Shire agent has sold four such properties in recent months, including one owned by her grandparents - "a home full of love and memories'. Ms Earley's grandfather Giuseppe Minati migrated to Australia in 1956, and her grandmother Rosa followed in 1958. The couple, who were both from northern Italy, married and bought 2 Orana Avenue, on the corner of Waratah Street, Kirrawee. After living in the existing small dwelling on the block, they completed a new brick house in 1961, where they raised three children. "It was the first brick home in the street," Ms Earley said. "In the late '50s and early '60s, the property was surrounded by farmland. "The house is a brick veneer / full brick construction, complete with a cellar, where the Minati family used to make their own red wine and tomato sauce. "They also had a large vegetable garden that provided fresh produce and herbs for the family." Ms Earley said the home was cherished by the couple's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "Every Christmas, Easter, New Year, birthdays, every celebration for our family has been there," she said. Ms Earley's grandfather passed in 2015 and her grandmother has moved to a nursing home. The family is gathering for a final celebration over lunch on New Year's Day before settlement occurs later in January, Ms Earley said, while it was an emotional sale for the family, they were pleased the house had been purchased by a young family. "The property was sold off-market within just seven days through our database to a beautiful couple with a young daughter from Randwick," she said. Ms Early said a feature of the real estate market at present was that it was difficult to get buyers to make decisions, especially so close to Christmas. "But, anything around the mid one million dollar mark is a popular price point for buyers," she said. "The last four properties I have sold in Kirrawee have all been the same era, original '60s build. "They are solid homes that have stood the test of time. Buyers are loving that and the fact they can come in and add their own touch. "Kirrawee is a great suburb because you are near South Village, the train station, great parks and not far from Westfield Miranda. Cowboys set for Thanksgiving visit from Giants after ending 5-game losing streakNCC Renews MTN’s NTEL Spectrum Lease AgreementVICTORIA - A Vancouver Island First Nation whose people were the first to greet European explorers in the region almost 250 years ago is taking British Columbia to court, seeking title to its traditional territories and financial compensation. The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation filed a claim Thursday in B.C. Supreme Court seeking a return of decision-making, resource and ecological stewardship, said Chief Mike Maquinna, a descendent of the former Chief Maquinna who met British explorer Capt. James Cook in 1776. Crown-authorized forest industry activities approved by the province without the consent of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation have resulted in cultural, economic and environmental impacts, he said at a news conference on Thursday. “Our people, the Mowachaht/Muchalaht, have endured many hardships since first meeting Capt. Cook, who was the explorer who first came into our territory,” said Maquinna. “As a result of the explorations of our territory, the natural resources of our lands have been taken. We want to correct rights and wrongs here and hopefully as time goes on this will show that Mowachaht/Muchalaht has been infringed upon since time of contact.” Capt. Cook and Chief Maquinna met in March 1776 at the traditional Mowachaht/Muchalaht whale-hunting village of Yuquot, later named Friendly Cove by Cook. The Parks Canada website says Yuquot was designated a national historic site in 1923 as the ancestral home of the First Nation, which was continuously occupied for more than 4,300 years and the centre of their social, political and economic world. The Parks Canada website says the village became the capital for all 17 tribes of the Nootka Sound region. Maquinna said the province has been acting as the sole decision-making authority in the Gold River-Tahsis areas of northern Vancouver Island, especially with regards to the forest resource, without the consent of his nation. Hereditary Chief Jerry Jack said the claim seeks title to about 430,000 hectares of land on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island and an amount of financial compensation to be determined by the court. “It is common knowledge we were here long before Capt. Cook and now we have to go to court and definitively prove that,” he said. “I don’t like that we have to prove that we owned it before he showed up to my territory, to my beach.” The land title case does not make any claims against private land owners, homeowners or recreational hunting and fishing operators, said Jack. Premier David Eby said the B.C. government prefers negotiated land-claims settlements rather than become involved in lengthy, expensive court cases, but the Mowachaht/Muchalaht have the right to take that route. “We have no problem with them doing that,” he said at an unrelated news conference in Langley. “We’d rather sit down and find a path forward.” The 15-page notice of claim seeks declarations that the First Nation has Aboriginal title to its lands and that B.C.‘s Forest Act and Land Act will no longer apply to Mowachaht/Muchalaht lands once title is declared. Jack said the nation decided against pursuing formal treaty talks with the federal and provincial government years ago and has been planning the land title court case “for many decades.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 12, 2024. Note to readers: This is a corrected story. The Mowachaht/Muchalalaht First Nation previously said it sought title to about 66,000 hectares of land. The First Nation now says it is seeking title to about 430,000 hectares of land.

Hydrogen still has a role to play in decarbonisation Heavy transport and replacing existing fossil fuel-derived hydrogen are areas for clean hydrogen to lead Natural hydrogen capturing investor interest as viable energy sources Is hydrogen still the “fuel of the future”? Perhaps not as a replacement for fossil fuels as was previously thought, but almost certainly in some sectors where carbon abatement is challenging. Despite the hopes of major automotive companies such as Toyota – possibly the biggest proponent of hydrogen vehicles – adoption of consumer hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) vehicles has been downright dismal in Australia. The sales figures are telling. Throughout the entirety of the June 2024 quarter, a grand total of FIVE HFC-powered cars were sold in Australia, barely a blip compared to the 25,353 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sold during the same period. Tesla’s popular Model Y and Model 3s alone account for 10,327 of these BEVs sales. In this space at least, hydrogen has conceded the field without even the pretence of a battle. But there are plenty of areas where it is taking the lead. Still hope for hydrogen in transport That’s not to say that hydrogen won’t play a role in the transport sector. It is still a rich source of energy and addresses issues such as recharging (or refuelling) time, infrastructure and power delivery where BEVs might struggle. Pure Hydrogen Corporation (ASX:PH2) is a firm believer that HFCs could help medium and heavy transport operators achieve their net zero goals and is already seeing strong interest from government and corporate customers for hydrogen-powered buses, waste collection trucks, prime movers, and refuelling solutions. In the past couple of months, the company has executed agreements to expand its distribution network with GreenH2 LATAM in November, ETHERO Truck + Energy in October and Riverview International Trucks in July. It also sold vehicles and supporting infrastructure under agreements such as those with Vietnam ASEAN Hydrogen Club and another party worth ~$10m in late October. PH2’s Taurus prime mover truck is on trial with PepsiCo and Barwon Water while multiple sales of waste disposal vehicles have been made to major waste recovery companies including JJ Richards and Solo, as well as prominent local governments such as the City of Newcastle. Development is underway on Stage 1 of its initial hydrogen micro-hub at Archerfield Airport in Queensland as a demonstration plant that will supply nearby commercial customers – including JJ Richards – as well as aviation industry demand. Fuel-cell waste truck. Pic: Pure Hydrogen Industrial uses Another area where hydrogen can reduce emissions is industries and sectors that can be quickly decarbonised by swapping out a feedstock manufactured using a process with high carbon intensity with the same feedstock made using a low or zero carbon process. A key example is in the production of ammonia fertiliser, which requires large quantities of hydrogen. The problem is this hydrogen is currently produced from fossil fuels, producing a significant amount of carbon emissions. Replacing fossil hydrogen with hydrogen produced using cleaner methods will make an immediate difference to our emissions. It also remains viable as a store of energy for peaking power plants that run on hydrogen rather than natural gas. Two options are typically touted as the way to go about doing so. The first – blue hydrogen – continues to produce hydrogen from fossil fuels but proposes to capture the resulting CO2 and sequester (or inject) it into depleted natural gas reservoirs, a process that’s typically seen as controversial given the paucity of commercial carbon capture and storage projects. One of the biggest CCS projects – the Gorgon CCS project that seeks to sequester CO2 produced by the Gorgon LNG project offshore Western Australia – is still performing well below capacity. However, emerging technologies might offer solutions here with Hazer Group (ASX:HZR) already demonstrating its proprietary technology for producing hydrogen and graphite from natural gas using a low-cost, low-emission process at its Commercial Demonstration Plant (CDP) in Munster, Perth. This has been running continuously for hundreds of hours and avoids concerns about CCS by turning the carbon byproduct into solid graphite that is valuable in its own right. The other technology is green hydrogen, which uses electrolysers powered by renewable energy to crack water into oxygen and hydrogen, though this route suffers from high costs and poor efficiency. Natural hydrogen coming to the fore However, the answer to the question of where to source cleaner hydrogen might lie under our feet. Natural, gold or white hydrogen is produced by certain geological processes such as when water reacts with certain rocks, deep in the subsurface. This gas is then trapped in reservoirs akin to those that host oil and gas. Not only can this be produced at a low cost using processes matured by the oil and gas sector, it also has very low carbon intensity. Natural hydrogen found close to the industries that use the gas are especially valuable as they allow their operators to minimise the challenges involved with storing and transporting it. The Nemaha project. Pic: HyTerra ASX companies chasing natural hydrogen include HyTerra Limited (ASX:HYT) and Top End Energy (ASX:TEE) , who are both operating in Kansas. HYT has been busy building up its acreage position at the Nemaha project, which sits in the centre of a major industrial and manufacturing hub between Kansas City and Wichita. The company recently expanded its landholding by >15% to more than 60,000 acres, giving it plenty of room to expand should its upcoming drill program be successful. But the best sign that the company is onto something intriguing is Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue (ASX:FMG) making a $21.9m investment to earn a 39.66% stake, which has just been approved by HYT’s shareholders. Not only is this a clear sign that the big players are interested, it also allowed the company to expand its original two well exploration program into a six well campaign to test a number of geological plays across its acreage. Historical exploration wells have already confirmed the presence of natural hydrogen and helium, with some returning up to 92% hydrogen and 3% helium. Newer to the game is Top End, which has just picked up the ~20,000 acre Serpentine project in Marshall, Riley and Washington counties at the heart of the natural hydrogen land rush underway in Kansas. The Serpentine leases are focused on areas adjacent to recent exploration drilling where leasing is highly competitive. TEE also benefits from regional access to rail, road, and gas pipelines to enable the delivery of hydrogen feedstock to downstream customers. In another demonstration of how deeply natural hydrogen has penetrated into the broader market, TEE raised $6m through a strongly support share placement to continue expanding its Kansas lease holding, technical studies, exploration drilling preparation, and explore the potential for expansion to other US states. New loan options for self-employed with stash of cashThe Rick Campbell era has ended while the Ryan Rigmaiden era has begun. The B.C. Lions introduced Rigmaiden as the football club’s new general manager at a press conference at the team’s Surrey practice facility on Wednesday, and at the same time, announced that they had parted ways with head coach Rick Campbell after four seasons and that Neil McEvoy was moving from the co-GM position that he shared with Campbell to the newly-created title of Vice President of Football Operations. As , the club moved quickly to elevate Rigmaiden from his previous role of Assistant General Manager and Director of U.S. Scouting in an effort to retain the 45-year-old native of Spokane, Washington. Rigmaiden was the Lions Director of U.S. Scouting from 2013 to 2017 before leaving to join the Winnipeg Blue Bombers organization. He returned in 2020 and has been responsible for bringing in import talent such as Sione Teuhema, Josh Banks, Alexander Hollins, Manny Rugamba, Jarell Broxton, Josh Woods and Kent Perkins to the Lions. His first task as general manager will be to find a new head coach. “The head coaching search is going to start immediately. There are several coaches that are currently unemployed that we are going to talk to. We also have several here internally that we will interview as well and then get permission (from other teams) for a handful of others,” said Rigmaiden, who becomes the 17th general manager in club history. There are approximately “eight to 10” candidates that the club will interview via ZOOM calls over the next week to 10 days, with that number being whittled down to three or four finalists who will then be interviewed in person. The front-runner for the head coaching position is former Lions quarterback Buck Pierce, who has been with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers organization since 2014 in various coaching capacities and has held the title of offensive coordinator since 2020. Other candidates include former Hamilton head coach Orlondo Steinauer, former Winnipeg and Ottawa head coach Paul LaPolice, former B.C. and Hamilton defensive coordinator Mark Washington and former Calgary special teams coordinator Mark Kilam as well as internal candidates that include offensive coordinator Jordan Maksymic and defensive coordinator Ryan Phillips, who is the only assistant from last year’s staff still under contract. The organization has no timeline in terms of naming a head coach and both Rigmaiden and McEvoy stressed that this will not be a rushed decision. That being said, there has to be some urgency as the new head coach will need time to assemble his own staff moving forward. Rigmaiden has set out three criteria that his hire will have to meet. “Leadership, accountability and toughness. I think those are essential for any head coach no matter what sport you are talking about. That’s going to be something that we emphasize,” replied Rigmaiden when queried on the subject. Rigmaiden hopes the new coach will be able to get the Lions to play with some edge. “The biggest thing I see is our lack of ability to overcome adversity on the field. There is a lack of mental toughness on this team. Internally, we have all been discussing that after last season. There are a variety of reasons why that happens. Instilling a new head coach with some different ideas and different values is going to be the biggest part of that,” said Rigmaiden. Another pressing item on his agenda will be trading quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and there has already been an organizational shift in philosophy in how that will be dealt with moving forward. “He (Adams Jr.) will not have a say in this process. We are going to do what’s best for the club but we are going to be in constant communication with him,” said Rigmaiden, walking back a promise that Campbell made as co-gm that Adams Jr. would be consulted in trade talks. Rigmaiden added that it was strictly a business call, referring to his solid relationship with Adams Jr. going back to the time when Adams Jr. was a 19-year-old at Eastern Washington University, and that the process would begin immediately by “calling two or three teams” on Monday night. * The natural landing spot for Campbell is Edmonton. As we mentioned last week, new Edmonton owner Larry Thompson wants to reconnect the Elks to the history and tradition of the Eskimos. He already has hired Chris Morris as the Elks president and then followed that up by signing Ed Hervey as the Elks general manager. Morris played 14 years for the Eskimos while Hervey suited up for eight seasons with the green and gold. Hiring Campbell would be a natural fit seeing how his father Hugh coached the Eskimos to five straight Grey Cups from 1978 to 1982. Hervey also hired Campbell in B.C. during his stint as the Lions general manager. * As for the Lions assistant coaches, Phillips could be reunited with former teammate Dave Dickenson as the defensive coordinator for the Calgary Stampeders if things don’t work out in B.C. Meanwhile, Edmonton has asked the Lions for permission to speak to Maksymic about their head coaching vacancy. In other news, linebackers coach Travis Brown has interviewed for the defensive coordinators position in Ottawa but could follow Campbell to Edmonton if the Ottawa job falls through as the two have history together going back to Brown’s playing days as a RedBlack. * With Hervey leaving as Tiger-Cats general manager, former Lions quarterback Danny McManus becomes the leading candidate to replace him in Hamilton. McManus, who led the Leos to a Grey Cup in 1994, has been with Winnipeg since 2013 as the club’s assistant general manager and director of U.S. scouting. McManus was also the quarterback for Hamilton when they last won the Grey Cup in 1999 and is revered in The Hammer. Other candidates include former UBC head coach Ted Goveia, who is the Bombers assistant GM and director of player personnel and a pair of Canadians working as scouts in the NFL in Vince Magri (Buffalo) and Chris Rossetti (New York Giants). Magri and Rossetti both spent time with the Toronto organization before going south.

Comedian David Walliams has opened up about his gender and sexuality, describing himself as “non binary”. The former Britain’s Got Talent judge made the candid admission during an interview on the Uncomfortable Conversations podcast , hosted by Australian presenter Josh Szeps. During a dialogue about gender politics and identity, the Little Britain star admitted that if were a young person today, he’d probably identify as “non-binary”. When asked how he’d describe himself if he were a teenager now, David answered: “I don’t know. I mean, I think in a way I’d probably say I’m non-binary, I think. Probably. I don’t know exactly.” David Walliams has opened up about his gender and sexuality on Aussie podcast Uncomfortable Conversations. Walliams said that if he was a young person today, he’d probably identify as “non-binary”. He also said that as a drama student he was inclined to be more experimental. He said: “I sort of think, where would I be positioning myself maybe, if I was now 19 or 20. Because I went to Bristol University and did a drama degree. And I think that course is where you’re probably... if there’s a group of people who are going to be most interested in that sort of area, most drawn to that area, it’s probably going to be drama students.” The 53-year-old described how he enjoyed going out to gay clubs during his student days with his girlfriend at the time in tow. “I mean, it’s interesting. So I had this girlfriend at the end of university and we used to go out — I used to go out — we used to go to like gay clubs and dance for like six hours and I’d be wearing like a skirt or stuff like that.” Walliams said that as a drama student in university, he was inclined to be more experimental. Picture: Tristan Fewings/Getty Images Then podcast host Josh asked the comedian and author a direct question about his sexuality. He said: “And what about your sexuality?” You always lean into Britain’s most famous bi-curious comedian. Was that a real reflection of your adolescence did you fool around with guys?” The Boy in the Dress author then responded by saying, “Yeah I’d say so, but again it seems odd because these things were a big deal to talk about.” But then the TV star and author underscored that sexuality doesn’t need to be set in stone as he described the differences between himself and his former comedy Little Britain co-star, Matt Lucas. “Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I was just gay. Because I’m really drawn to gay things. I really like gay culture. It’s interesting because Matt Lucas is gay. And he’s like into football and he’s into musicals as well, actually... But yeah I’d say I’m probably sort of camper than him. It’s hard, I don’t know.” With Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas. In light of the conversations and awareness of gender identity in the last decade, David also suggested that his debut novel, The Boy in the Dress , was ahead of its time. He said: “ The Boy in the Dress 15 years ago, which was sort of seen as a bit more daring then, and it’s always something - I’ve always sort of felt like celebrating difference on, so I’ve always thought it’s exciting.” The writer and comedian has an 11-year-old son, Alfred from his relationship with model Lara Stone. The pair married in a lavish ceremony in London’s Claridge’s hotel in 2010 and were together for five years before filing for divorce in 2015. Since making his name in TV comedy through his popular sketch shows, Little Britain and as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent , David has become one of the most successful children’s author’s of all time, selling 50 million copies of his books worldwide. made history a year ago this month when the FDA approved Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel), the CRISPR-edited therapy it co-developed with , to treat sickle cell disease (SCD). A month later, the agency authorized Casgevy to treat transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia in patients 12 years and older. Yet CRISPR Therapeutics’ stock has failed to sustain the momentum it built when it reached its 52-week high of $91.10 on February 22, a day after the company reported positive fourth-quarter and full-year 2023 results. Since then, Casgevy’s patient uptake has progressed slower than analysts expected. While some have cited Casgevy’s list price of $2.2 million per course of treatment as a cost that insurers have balked at bearing, Kevin Niehoff, associate director at IPD Analytics told Managed Healthcare Executive (MHE) he believed price was less a barrier than the fact that SCD patients have many other treatment alternatives, such as stem cell or bone marrow transplants, as well as hydroxyurea. From a 52-week high of $91.10 on February 22, CRISPR Therapeutics shares have to $49.51 as of Thursday, though they Friday to $51.56 in afternoon trading as of 2 p.m. ET. Over the past month, two electronic transfer funds (ETFs) of ARK Investment Management (ARK Invest)—the high-profile firm led by chief investment officer and portfolio manager Catherine D. (Cathie) Wood—have largely been swimming against the investor tide by snapping up more than 1 million shares of CRISPR Therapeutics shares, mostly raising its stake in the company in recent weeks. From a reported market value of $352,285,403 at the end of the third quarter, ARK’s holdings in CRISPR Therapeutics climbed 16% to $409,634,402.21 as of Friday, based on its holdings of 8,273,771 shares. Most of ARK’s stake in CRISPR Therapeutics consists of the 6,453,394 shares held by Ark Invest’s , with a market value of $319,507,536.94—the seventh highest market value among the 33 companies in which ARKG holds shares—and a portfolio weight of 4.56% The remaining 1,820,377 shares valued at $90,126,865.27 are held by the firm’s . CRISPR Therapeutics holds the second largest market value among ARKG’s 37 portfolio companies—and a portfolio weight of 7.68%. Without citing CRISPR Therapeutics by name, Wood offered a likely explanation on a recent podcast for why the ARK ETFs have been bullish on the company in recent weeks. “Many healthcare analysts think that curing a disease is not going to be good business, even though it’s amazing for humanity. They think that a cure is one and done, which it is with gene editing,” Wood observed on the November 25 episode of “The Important Part: Investing with Liz Thomas.” “The old model is almost like an annuity, a regular payment monthly for that prescription, out for however long the patent lasts. We believe a cure in business terms is going to be worth two to—depending on the indication—20 times more valuable than a traditional medication,” Wood projected. “So, stay tuned for our research. We’re putting out a lot in that area because we believe it is so misunderstood.” A closer look between Wednesday and Friday, however, shows that the ARK funds followed dips in CRISPR Therapeutics’ share price late last week with selloffs of shares in the company. On Thursday, when CRSP shares from $51.24 to $51.14, ARK trimmed its holdings by 5,864 shares (down 0.1% from Wednesday), reducing its total market value by 0.3% or $1,135,639.78. But by Friday, when the stock to $49.51, ARKK and ARKG shrunk their combined holdings by 78,936 shares (down nearly 1% from Thursday), a market value decline of 4% or $17,523,136.05. So as with other investors, the ARK funds appear to have moved beyond the positive commercial momentum for Casgevy shown in third-quarter results released last month by CRISPR Therapeutics and Vertex. Vertex leads global development, manufacturing, regulatory and commercialization of Casgevy, with support from CRISPR Therapeutics. According to Vertex: • As of mid-October, 45 of the planned 75 authorized treatment centers (ATCs) have been activated in all regions of the world where Casgevy has been approved—the U.S., the European Union, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Canada, and Switzerland. • Cell collection had begun in about 40 patients, double the approximately 20 reported after the second quarter, while additional patients have received infusions. • The first $2 million in revenue has been generated from the first commercial patient dosed with Casgevy during Q3. That revenue was included within the $2.772 billion in product revenue that Vertex reported for the quarter. “We view the Casgevy progress as a (+)ve [positive] indicator of getting pts [patients] in the funnel, and expect a majority of ~40 pts will get tx’d [treated] w/in 1–2 quarters,” Maury Raycroft, PhD, equity analyst with Jefferies, projected in a November 5 research note. “It can take ~5–6mos from cell collection to tx. Pt demand is high, and VRTX is adding a 3rd manuf[acturing] facility w/ Lonza.” Raycroft added that Casgevy’s opportunity to attract patients in the Middle East region was “underappreciated and appealing,” with about 23,000 patients eligible. Following a meeting between CRISPR Therapeutics executives and Jefferies analysts at the firm’s London Healthcare Conference late last month, Raycroft reported that management “is pleased w/ how the ‘funnel’ trajectory is playing out commercially as underlying demand/interest has been very strong WW [worldwide] along w/ payer support. It’s only a mechanics question now as more centers get activated.” Writing in a November 20 research note, Raycroft and four Jefferies colleagues reported CRISPR Therapeutics executives expect momentum to build up in coming months, referring to the slow but steady and gradually progressing launch of Yescarta (axicabtagene ciloleucel), the chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) cancer treatment marketed by the Kite subsidiary of following FDA approval in 2017. CRISPR Therapeutics executives told Jefferies analysts the market potential for Casgevy stems from the presence of some 25,000 severe SCD patients in the U.S., another roughly 30,000 in the Middle East, and unspecified growing numbers in the U.K. & France than originally envisioned. In its third-quarter investor presentation, CRISPR Therapeutics pinpointed about 23,000 patients in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain alone, plus about 35,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe combined. “Mgmt [management] noted two areas, where they continue to invest are on global extension and capacity expansion, anticipating the demand,” Raycroft wrote adding that 2024 Casgevy-related expenses have been trending around ~$0.5 billion. Vertex shoulders 60% of costs and enjoys that percentage of profits, with the remaining 40% of costs and profits going to CRISPR Therapeutics. Also positive on Vertex’s commercial progress with Casgevy has been analyst Sami Corwin, PhD, and two colleagues at William Blair. “We view the treatment of the first commercial Casgevy patient as a milestone for the companies and believe they have established the infrastructure to support significant revenue generation in 2025 as more cell collections are converted into cell infusions,” Corwin and colleagues wrote November 5 in a research note. • shares from 74 cents to 49 cents in after-hours trading Wednesday after the company said it will carry out a 1-for-20 reverse stock split following approval by both its board and stockholders at a reconvened annual meeting held that day. Bluebird acknowledged that its primary goal is to increase the per share market price of its common stock to regain compliance with NASDAQ’s minimum bid price requirement for continued listing. The reverse stock split is expected to become effective at 5 p.m. ET on December 12, and the first reverse-split shares will start trading the following day. The drop partially wiped out a 105% gain earlier that day, from 36 cents to 74 cents, after the company announced that it reached agreement with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation(also called the CMS Innovation Center) to offer an outcomes-based agreement for the gene therapy LyfgeniaTM (lovotibeglogene autotemcel) under the Cell and Gene Therapy Access Model. • shares from $20.04 to $29.85 on December 2, after the company joined Zai Lab (NASDAQ: ZLAB; HKEX: 9688) to announce positive topline results from the pivotal Phase III PANOVA-3 trial (NCT03377491) assessing its Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy as a first-line treatment for unresectable, locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. TTFields met the study’s primary endpoint by showing a statistically significant improvement in median overall survival (mOS) versus gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel alone, Novocure said. In the intent-to-treat population, patients treated with TTFields plus gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel had an mOS of 16.20 months vs. 14.16 months in patients treated with gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel alone. • shares from $3.36 to $8.40 on December 2 after the company reported positive final results from the randomized Phase II trial (NCT04731467) evaluating its lead oncology drug CM24 in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Those results showed a consistent and continuous decrease of the PDAC biomarker CA19-9 in the experimental arm reaching a median percentage reduction from baseline of approximately 80%, vs. a 40% increase in the control arm. The trial assessed CM24—a humanized monoclonal antibody designed to block CEACAM1—in combination with Bristol Myers Squibb’s immune checkpoint inhibitor Opdivo (nivolumab) plus standard-of-care (SoC) chemotherapy in second-line metastatic PDAC patients vs. SoC chemotherapy alone. • shares over two days after the company said it will evaluate potential next steps for REL-1017 after acknowledging that the NMDA inhibitor was unlikely to meet with statistical significance the primary efficacy endpoint of the Phase III Reliance II trial (NCT06011577), which is assessing the drug for use in combination with other approved anti-depressants for major depressive disorder (MDD). The trial’s Independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) concluded during a pre-planned interim analysis that continuing Reliance II would be futile. Shares from $2.77 to 63 cents Wednesday, then Thursday to 45 cents after Mizuho Securities analyst Uy Ear downgraded the stock from “Outperform” to “Neutral” and slashed the firm’s 12-month price target 96% from $23 to $1. • shares from 95 cents to 51 cents Tuesday after the company said it entered into a definitive agreement to immediately exercise warrants to purchase up to 4,064,040 shares of common stock issued by the company on August 22, at $1 per share. The sale is designed to generate more than $4 million in gross proceeds—about double the company’s $2.168 million market capitalization. A day earlier, Revelation shares rose 25% after the FDA accepted the company’s investigational new drug (IND) application for Gemini, a proprietary formulation of phosphorylated hexaacyl disaccharide (PHAD ). The decision allowed Revelation to launch a U.S.-based Phase Ib trial assessing Gemini as a preconditioning treatment in patients with chronic kidney disease. Revelation shares have cratered 98% over the past year, from $22.95 on December 4, 2023.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former Temple basketball standout Hysier Miller sat for a long interview with the NCAA as it looked into concerns about unusual gambling activity, his lawyer said Friday amid reports a federal probe is now under way. “Hysier Miller fully cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation. He sat for a five-hour interview and answered every question the NCAA asked. He also produced every document the NCAA requested,” lawyer Jason Bologna said in a statement. “Hysier did these things because he wanted to play basketball this season, and he is devastated that he cannot.” Miller, a three-year starter from South Philadelphia, transferred to Virginia Tech this spring. However, the Hokies released him last month due to what the program called “circumstances prior to his enrollment at Virginia Tech.” Bologna declined to confirm that a federal investigation had been opened, as did spokespeople for both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported Thursday that authorities were investigating whether Miller bet on games he played in at Temple, and whether he adjusted his performance accordingly. “Hysier Miller has overcome more adversity in his 22 years than most people face in their lifetime. He will meet and overcome whatever obstacles lay ahead," Bologna said. Miller scored eight points — about half his season average of 15.9 — in a 100-72 loss to UAB on March 7 that was later flagged for unusual betting activity. Temple said it has been aware of those allegations since they became public in March, and has been cooperative. “We have been fully responsive and cooperative with the NCAA since the moment we learned of the investigation,” Temple President John Fry said in a letter Thursday to the school community. However, Fry said Temple had not received any requests for information from state or federal law enforcement agencies. He vowed to cooperate fully if they did. “Coaches, student-athletes and staff members receive mandatory training on NCAA rules and regulations, including prohibitions on involvement in sports wagering," Fry said in the letter. The same week the Temple-UAB game raised concerns, Loyola (Maryland) said it had removed a person from its basketball program after it became aware of a gambling violation. Temple played UAB again on March 17, losing 85-69 in the finals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. League spokesman Tom Fenstermaker also declined comment on Friday. Radical Jaguar rebrand and new logo sparks ire online NEW YORK (AP) — A promotional video for a rebrand of British luxury car brand Jaguar is being criticized online for showing models in brightly colored outfits — and no car. The rebrand, which includes a new logo, is slated to launch Dec. 2 during Miami Art Week, when the company will unveil a new electric model. But Jaguar Land Rover, a unit of India’s Tata Motors Ltd., has been promoting it online. The Jaguar brand is in the middle of a transition to going all-electric. “Copy Nothing,” marketing materials read. “We’re here to delete the ordinary. To go bold. To copy nothing.” Trump has promised again to release the last JFK files. But experts say don’t expect big revelations DALLAS (AP) — The nation is set to mark 61 years since President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade passed through downtown Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Even after over six decades, conspiracy theories about what happened that day still swirl and the desire to follow every thread of information hasn’t waned. President-elect Donald Trump made promises over the summer that if reelected he would declassify the remaining records. At this point, only a few thousand of millions of pages of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released. And those who have studied what's been released so far say that the public shouldn’t anticipate any earth-shattering revelations even if the remaining files are declassified. Bitcoin is at the doorstep of $100,000 as post-election rally rolls on NEW YORK (AP) — Bitcoin is jumping again, rising above $98,000 for the first time Thursday. The cryptocurrency has been shattering records almost daily since the U.S. presidential election, and has rocketed more than 40% higher in just two weeks. It's now at the doorstep of $100,000. Cryptocurrencies and related investments like crypto exchange-traded funds have rallied because the incoming Trump administration is expected to be more “crypto-friendly.” Still, as with everything in the volatile cryptoverse, the future is hard to predict. And while some are bullish, other experts continue to warn of investment risks. NFL issues security alert to teams and the players' union following recent burglaries The NFL has issued a security alert to teams and the players’ union following recent burglaries involving the homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, the league says homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.” Law enforcement officials noted these groups target the homes on days the athletes have games. Players were told to take precautions and implement home security measures to reduce the risk of being targeted. Some of the burglary groups have conducted extensive surveillance on targets. Penn State wins trademark case over retailer's use of vintage logos, images PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Penn State has won a closely watched trademark fight over an online retailer’s use of its vintage logos and images. A Pennsylvania jury awarded Penn State $28,000 in damages earlier this week over products made and sold by the firms Vintage Brand and Sportswear Inc. Penn State accused them of selling “counterfeit” clothing and accessories. The defendants said their website makes clear they are not affiliated with Penn State. At least a dozen other schools have sued the defendants on similar grounds, but the Pennsylvania case was the first to go to trial. Has a waltz written by composer Frederic Chopin been discovered in an NYC museum? NEW YORK (AP) — A previously unknown musical work written by composer Frederic Chopin appears to have been found in a library in New York City. The Morgan Library & Museum says the untitled and unsigned piece is the first new manuscript of the Romantic era virtuoso to be discovered in nearly a century. Robinson McClellan, the museum’s curator, says he stumbled across the work in May while going through a collection brought to the Manhattan museum years earlier. He worked with outside experts to verify the document's authenticity. But there’s debate whether the waltz is an original Chopin work or merely one written in his hand. Volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula erupts for the 7th time in a year GRINDAVIK, Iceland (AP) — A volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland is spewing lava from a fissure in its seventh eruption since December. Iceland's seismic monitors said the eruption started with little warning late Wednesday and created a long fissure but looked to be smaller than eruptions in August and May. Around 50 houses were evacuated after the Civil Protection agency issued the alert, along with guests at the famous Blue Lagoon resort, according to the national broadcaster. The repeated eruptions over the past year have caused damage to the town of Grindavík and forced people to relocate. Australian teen and British woman who drank tainted alcohol in Laos have died, bringing toll to 5 VIENTIANE, Laos (AP) — An Australian teenager and a British woman have died after drinking tainted alcohol in Laos in what Australia’s prime minister said was every parent’s nightmare. Officials earlier said an American and two Danish tourists also had died following reports that multiple people had been sickened in town popular with backpackers. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told Parliament that 19-year-old Bianca Jones had died after being evacuated from Vang Vieng, Laos, for treatment in a Thai hospital. Her friend, also 19, remains hospitalized in Thailand. Later Thursday, Britain said a British woman also died and the media in the U.K. identified her as 28-year-old Simone White. US ahead in AI innovation, easily surpassing China in Stanford's new ranking The U.S. leads the world in developing artificial intelligence technology, surpassing China in research and other important measures of AI innovation, according to a newly released Stanford University index. There’s no surefire way to rank global AI leadership but Stanford researchers have made an attempt by measuring the “vibrancy” of the AI industry across a variety of dimensions, from how much research and investment is happening to how responsibly the technology is being pursued to prevent harm. Pop star Ed Sheeran helps favorite soccer team sign player before getting on stage with Taylor Swift It turns out British pop star Ed Sheeran is also good at recruiting soccer players. Sheeran is a minority shareholder at English soccer team Ipswich Town and it needed his help over the summer to get a player to join the club. Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton tells a Soccerex industry event in Miami: “Ed jumped on a Zoom call with him at the training ground, just before he stepped on stage with Taylor Swift. Hopefully that was a key part in getting the player across the line.” Ashton didn’t disclose the player in question, saying only: “He’s certainly scoring a few goals.”Highlands and Islands Airports ( HIAL ) has appointed a new chief operating officer. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - Official Story TrailerPresident Joe Biden’s administration announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Energy will make a $6.6 billion loan to Rivian Automotive to build a factory in Georgia that had stalled as the startup electric vehicle maker struggled to become profitable. It’s unclear whether the administration can complete the loan before Donald Trump becomes president again in less than two months, or whether the Trump administration might try to claw the money back. Trump previously vowed to end federal electric vehicle tax credits , which are worth up to $7,500 for new zero-emission vehicles and $4,000 for used ones. Rivian made a splash when it went public and began producing large electric R1 SUVs, pickup trucks and delivery vans at a former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois, in 2021. Months later, the California-based company announced it would build a second, larger, $5 billion plant about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Atlanta, near the town of Social Circle. The R1 vehicles cost $70,000 or more. The company plans to produce R2 vehicles, a smaller SUV, in Georgia with lower price tags aimed at a mass market. The first phase of Rivian’s Georgia factory is projected to make 200,000 vehicles a year, with a second phase capable of another 200,000 a year. Eventually, the plant is projected to employ 7,500 workers. But Rivian was unable to meet production and sales targets and rapidly burned through cash. In March, the company said it would pause construction of the Georgia plant. The company said it would begin assembling its R2 SUV in Illinois instead. CEO RJ Scaringe said the move would allow Rivian to start selling the R2 sooner and save $2.25 billion in capital spending. Since then, German automaker Volkswagen AG said in June it would invest $5 billion in Rivian in a joint venture in which Rivian would share software and electrical technology with Volkswagen. The money eased Rivian’s cash crunch. Tuesday’s announcement throws a lifeline to Rivian’s grander plans. The company said its plans to make the R2 and the smaller R3 in Georgia are back on and that production will begin in 2028. “This loan would enable Rivian to more aggressively scale our U.S. manufacturing footprint for our competitively priced R2 and R3 vehicles that emphasize both capability and affordability,” Scaringe said in a statement. The Energy Department said the loan would substantially boost electric vehicles made in the United States and support Biden’s goal of having zero-emission vehicles make up half of all new U.S. sales by 2030. “As one of a few American EV startups with light duty vehicles already on the road, Rivian’s Georgia facility will allow the company to reach production volumes that make its products more cost competitive and accelerate access to international markets,” the department said in a statement. The loan includes $6 billion, plus $600 million in interest that will be rolled into the principal. The money would come from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, which provides low-interest loans to make fuel-efficient vehicles and components. The program has focused mostly on loans to new battery factories for electric vehicles under Biden, but earlier helped finance initial production of the Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf, two pioneering electric vehicles. The loan program, created in 2007, requires a “reasonable prospect of repayment” of the loan. Under Biden, the program has announced deals totaling $33.3 billion, including $9.2 billion for massive battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky for Ford’s electric vehicles. Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff , who has been a vocal supporter of electric vehicle and solar manufacturing in Georgia, hailed Tuesday’s announcement as “yet another historic federal investment in Georgia electric vehicle manufacturing.” Ossoff had asked Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to support the loan in July. “Our federal manufacturing incentives are driving economic development across the state of Georgia,” Ossoff said in a statement. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp says his goal is to make Georgia a center of the electric vehicle industry. But the Republican has had a strained relationship with the Biden administration over its industrial policy, even as some studies have found Georgia has netted more electric vehicle investment than any other state. Kemp has long claimed that manufacturers were picking Georgia before Biden’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, was passed. Efforts to bring Rivian to Georgia predated the Biden administration and “our shared vision to bring opportunity to Georgia will remain no matter who resides in the White House or what party controls Congress,” Kemp spokesperson Garrison Douglas said Tuesday. The loan to Rivian could rescue one of the Kemp administration’s signature economic development projects even as Biden leaves office. That could put Rivian and Kemp in the position of defending the loan if Trump tries to quash it. State and local governments offered Rivian an incentive package worth an estimated $1.5 billion in 2022. Neighbors opposed to development of the Georgia site mounted legal challenges. State and local governments spent around $125 million to buy and prepare the nearly 2,000-acre (810-hectare) site. The state also has completed most of $50 million in roadwork that it pledged. The pause at Rivian contrasts with rapid construction at Hyundai Motor Group’s $7.6 billion electric vehicle and battery complex near Savannah. The Korean automaker said in October that it had begun production in Ellabell, where it plans to eventually employ 8,500.Authored by Jonathan Turley, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is widely known to be angling to be the next Democratic presidential nominee after the implosion of Vice President Kamala Harris. This week, Newsom positioned not just his campaign but also his state as part of the “resistance” for the next four years against the Trump Administration. Newsom pushed a special session to secure a $25 million war chest to take the Trump Administration to court, even before the inauguration and release of policies by the incoming administration. I wrote earlier about how the loss of both houses, as well as the White House, will mean that lawfare and obstructive efforts will shift to the states . Newsom is moving to out-position governors (and potential primary opponents) like Govs. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker moved first in a chest-pounding press conference that he would stop the incoming administration from trying to remove undocumented persons, declaring, “You come for my people, you come through me.” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) added that he will “fight to the death” against Trump’s agenda. Newsom has upped the ante by demanding millions to pre-fund litigation against the new administration. With a massive budget debt burden, Newsom has continued to pile on new debt for politically popular initiatives. I cannot recall any state pre-positioning funds for the sole purpose of litigating against any incoming administration. The most obvious area of disagreement is the effort to ramp up the enforcement of immigration laws and to carry out deportations. While polls show that the public overwhelmingly supports such enforcement, including deportations, California is seeking to take the lead in court actions designed to slow or frustrate such efforts. It could prove costly, not just in litigation expenditures. The Trump Administration could seek to withhold federal funding from states and cities obstructing enforcement efforts. In the meantime, sanctuary cities are continuing to face rising costs associated with rising populations of undocumented migrants. For example, as we previously discussed , Denver Mayor Mike Johnson (D) declared that he was preparing the Mile-High City for its “Tiananmen Square moment” to fight the federal government in any attempt to deport unlawful migrants . Johnson warned that he would have not only Denver police “stationed at the county line to keep [ICE] out” but also “50,000 Denverites.” He later walked back the comments while repeating that the city is positioning itself to be part of the resistance. Now the Common Sense Institute (CSI), a non-partisan research organization estimated that eight percent of the city’s 2025 budget of $4.4 billion is now dedicated to housing and services for undocumented persons. If true, that amounts to $356 million or $7,900 per migrant. California has led other states in offering a wide array of benefits to undocumented persons. Notably, Californian voters surprised many Democrats this election with almost 40% voting for President-elect Trump over California’s own Vice President Kamala Harris. There is an obvious political advantage to Newsom in securing these public funds to assume the mantle as the leader of “the resistance” as a foundation for his 2028 campaign. The question is how such an obstructive position will prove to the advantage of Californians. As citizens sought to increase criminal penalties by passing Proposition 36 by over 70 percent (over the opposition of Newsom ), the governor is focusing on setting aside millions to fund a high-profile legal campaign against Trump’s administration. Ultimately, the litigation campaign is unlikely to change federal enforcement efforts significantly. However, Newsom hopes it will significantly change his electoral enhancement efforts.

Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal reaches mid-way point - you can still help

In a Nov. 26 Sentinel letter to the editor, Jeffrey Piccola, chairman of the Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), said Tim Potts’ guest editorial (Nov. 18) “underscores the persistent efforts ... to undermine families’ right to choose the best educational path for their children.” Mr. Piccola missed Mr. Potts’ point, intentionally I thought. Potts itemized tax dollars spent by CCA on a vineyard, catered ceremonies, corporate office signage, advertising, flying lessons, non school-related sports teams, duplicative vo-tech education and millions for buildings and land for this online school. Severe underfunding in our public schools resulted in a 2023 court mandate requiring the commonwealth to find a way to fairly and fully fund them. Meanwhile, $540 million of our tax dollars is projected to go to CCA for the 2024-25 school year, with easily 14 million having been spent on expenses unrelated to helping children achieve a “best educational path.” In fact, as Potts points out, “not one of the 13 cyber charter schools [in Pa.] performed better than the state average on state tests of reading, math or science. Not one had a 6-year graduation rate higher than the state average.” Piccola’s letter shows his reading comprehension needs to be improved. So does public education funding. That’s the point: Make sure our tax dollars are spent on educating children, not on corporate excess. Piccola accuses Potts of criticizing CCA “for investing in the academic, social and emotional growth of students.” Wrong. Potts criticizes CCA for spending millions of our tax dollars on expenses having nothing to do with online education improvements and everything to do with stripping public schools of the resources they lack. Write to Gov. Shapiro and your legislators. Ask them to fully and fairly fund our public schools and insist that cyber charter schools stop wasting our money. Katie Daniels In a recent Sentinel letter to the editor titled “Provide families right to choose,” Jeffrey Piccola, board chairman of Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA), recently replied to Timothy Potts’ earlier guest column “Cyber charter schools waste taxpayer money, with little results.” Mr. Piccola’s response failed to address any of the points raised by Potts, but simply repeated the platitudes of school choice proponents. Generative AI could have provided a better response. Mr. Potts’ column didn’t address the general issues of school choice and charter schools. He even acknowledged that “cyber learning can be a very good thing for some students.” He focused specifically on the need to reform the current system for funding cyber charter schools, the appearance of abuse of this system by CCA, and the apparent lack of desirable educational outcomes from this system. Piccola didn’t deny any of the extravagant spending by CCA. Month after month, CCA sends over $400,000 to an advertising agency in New York City. He didn’t deny or defend the other examples of questionable expenditures listed by Potts. He didn’t address the claim that CCA has spent $176 million in unnecessary construction projects – for an online school. That’s money that could otherwise be used by our community schools for such things as providing air conditioning for over 100 schools in Pennsylvania that close in hot weather for lack of air conditioning. He didn’t deny that CCA’s academic record and graduation rate are below state averages, sometimes far below. “School choice” sounds like a great idea, and charter schools may be part of a reasonable strategy for improving school quality. But our current system for funding them penalizes our traditional district schools even when they are doing an excellent job. Worse yet, the current system for funding cyber charter schools is highly vulnerable to financial abuse. John Sigle Carlisle The partner agencies funded by the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County provide critical services that make a significant and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people in our communities. At the Bosler Memorial Library, United Way funding makes it possible to provide preschool age children and their parents with educationally and developmentally appropriate experiences that are fun and free. Research shows that quality early learning experiences lead to lifelong success. Through the library, thousands of children have started on that path to success. Children like Miles, whose mother says, “We’ve been coming to the library programs since my son was 8 months old, and he’s now 18 months. We’ve gone to Baby Time, Toddler Tales, the Play group and the Holiday Storytimes. We’re currently attending the STEAM Storytime. We continue to come for the developmental skillset Miles is learning. He is learning listening, speaking and social interaction. It’s learning beyond just loving books, which is awesome for our child to get outside of the house because I am a stay-at-home mom. We love that the teachers are modeling skills that parents can then reinforce at home with their babies. We see Miles generalize skills that he’s learning in class with songs and books at home. We love that the library is such an entertaining, educational and age-appropriate place for our child. We will continue to come for years to come.” The generous support provided to the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County by so many individuals and companies makes it possible to transform the lives of people every day. The support that the United Way provides to the library and the other partner agencies is a lifeline for today, and an investment in the future. The rise of renewable energy – paired with smart technology – offers an extraordinary opportunity to empower communities, enhance sustainability and reduce costs, writes Paul Budde . BACK IN 2006, I established the Smart Grid Australia Association . Here, we brought together organisations involved in the development of smart energy, working collaboratively to build smarter communities. Our major success was the government’s decision in 2010 to launch a $100 million Smart City Smart Grid pilot in the Newcastle area. Unfortunately, this initiative was immediately cancelled when the Coalition Government came to power in 2013. For the next ten years, energy policies remained in limbo under that government. On the positive side, the pilot propelled Newcastle to become one of the leading smart cities in Australia. But as is often the case - for such smart grid smart city projects on a larger scale - many more ducks need to be aligned to establish real, large-scale commercial projects. With the latest developments in smart grids, smart meters, and batteries, we are now getting closer to realising the benefits of such complex systems. As someone who has written extensively about the transformative power of smart grids and localised energy systems, I believe we are standing at a pivotal moment in energy innovation. The rise of renewable energy – paired with smart technology – offers an extraordinary opportunity to empower communities, enhance sustainability and reduce costs. However, as I’ve observed in both Australia and internationally, achieving this vision requires not only technological solutions but also robust regulatory frameworks to protect consumers and foster fair competition. I was triggered to revisit these issues after reading this recent ABC article . The Netherlands: Europe’s digital powerhouse The Netherlands has become a global juggernaut in terms of broadband, AI and cybersecurity. A Smarter, Cleaner Future Smart grids have the potential to revolutionise how we produce, store, and consume electricity. These systems enable real-time communication between utilities and consumers — optimising energy distribution and reducing waste. Neighbourhood energy systems take this concept further by allowing communities to manage energy collectively, leveraging shared infrastructure — such as community batteries. I’ve highlighted examples in the past, such as Australia’s Hornsdale Power Reserve (2017), which shows how large-scale battery storage can stabilise the grid and support renewable energy integration. But even more exciting is the potential for neighbourhood-level systems where shared batteries or virtual power plants could provide resilience and cost savings. Imagine a street or suburb pooling solar energy and storage to weather peak demand or blackouts — a vision that is becoming increasingly achievable. Learning from International examples Over the years, I’ve also drawn attention to international models that inspire us to think bigger. In 2016, I wrote about blockchain opportunities , a prime example here is the Kitakyushu Smart Community project in Japan. This initiative integrates renewable energy, storage, and demand-response systems to create a sustainable urban energy model. Similarly, the Brooklyn Microgrid Project in the United States demonstrates the power of decentralisation, where residents generate, store, and trade energy locally using blockchain technology. These examples prove that the localised energy systems we advocated for more than a decade ago here in Australia are not only viable but also scalable. Newcastle: Leading the way for Australian smart cities Newcastle's transformation into one of Australia's leading smart cities should be an inspiration for others to follow suit. Challenges and the need for regulation Thanks to party politics, Australia suffers from a knowledge and experience gap of more than a decade — and we must catch up to avoid repeating the mistakes highlighted in the ABC article. While the potential is immense, I’ve often warned that regulatory gaps could undermine these advancements. The control of energy data by metering companies – as seen in Australia – creates monopolistic "walled gardens", restricting access to critical information and stifling competition. Consumers are left unable to fully leverage their energy systems — and third-party innovators are shut out. Smart energy can deliver lower costs, but we need to ensure those benefits flow to the consumers. This is why I strongly advocate for transparent regulations that prioritise consumer rights to data access. Without these safeguards, the energy transition risks becoming more expensive and less equitable. I’ve seen how these challenges play out globally, and it’s clear that without intervention, the benefits of smart grids and localised systems could remain out of reach for many. The role of ISP-like resellers in energy innovation In my earlier work, I’ve drawn parallels between energy systems and the internet. Just as internet service providers (ISPs) aggregate bandwidth to serve multiple customers, energy resellers could combine distributed energy resources like solar panels and batteries to create neighbourhood-scale virtual power plants. This model could stabilise local grids, reduce reliance on centralised power plants, and democratise access to renewable energy benefits. I’ve long argued that this ISP-like approach can lower barriers for communities that lack resources for individual systems. By coordinating energy generation and consumption at the local level, such systems could unlock significant savings while enhancing grid reliability. Unlocking the path toward a sustainable energy future Grid flexibility measures and distributed energy resources are key elements for creating a more sustainable and reliable energy system. My Vision for the Future Reflecting on the lessons from Australia and international examples, I firmly believe that we can pick up where we left off in 2013 and accelerate progress based on new knowledge and global developments. We can and should build a smarter, cleaner, and more equitable energy future. Policymakers must step up to address the regulatory void in smart meter markets and ensure fair access to energy data. This is not just about technology — it’s about empowering individuals and communities to take control of their energy destiny. The success of projects like Kitakyushu and Brooklyn shows us what is possible when innovation meets thoughtful regulation. I believe we can apply these principles to create resilient neighbourhood energy systems that not only reduce costs but also enhance sustainability. By embracing these ideas, we can ensure that the energy transition benefits everyone, not just a select few. This is the future I’ve envisioned and championed throughout my work, and I remain committed to seeing it realised. MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Zach Tanner threw two touchdown passes to Shawn Charles and Robert Morris ended the season with a 31-13 win over Stonehill on Saturday. Tanner and Charles hooked up for an 86-yard score on the second snap for the Colonials (7-5, 4-2 Northeast Conference) and then went for 51 yards to make it 21-0 after one quarter. Tanner was 13 of 20 for 268 yards with two interceptions. Charles caught four passes for 149 yards. DJ Moyer capped a 69-yard drive in the first quarter with a 1-yard plunge. Danny Hurley kicked two field goals to help get the Skyhawks (1-10, 0-6) within eight points but a field goal and a Turner Schmidt fumble recovery for a score wrapped up the game for Robert Morris. Joe Biden's pardon of his son Hunter spurs broader discussion on who else should be granted clemencyMANCHESTER, NH – The long-awaited Phase Two of the Manchester School District’s Long Term Facilities Plan is set to be discussed at the Manchester Board of School Committee’s meeting on Monday Dec. 9. In this new phase, all of Manchester’s 12 existing public elementary schools will receive updates – excluding for Beech Street Elementary School, which was proposed to be rebuilt across the street from its current location as part of the first phase of the facilities plan. That proposal is dependent on a land swap which stalled out two weeks ago after the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted 8-7 to “pause” the project. In addition to Beech Street, there will be new buildings at Bakersville, Gossler Park, Jewett Street, Smyth Road and Webster Elementary Schools. Weston, Northwest, McDonough, Parker-Varney, Highland-Goffes Falls, and Green Acres will receive renovations. The schools will be rebuilt or renovated in four phases: Gossler Park, Jewett Street and Smyth Road in the first group (2026-2032), Bakersville, McDonough and Webster in the second group (2033-2039), Highland-Goffe’s Falls, Northwest, Weston in the third group (2040-2046) and Green Acres and Parker Varney in the final group (2047-2053). With the first phase of the facilities plan finalizing the transition of fifth grade public school classes into the city’s four public middle schools, there are no further plans for the middle schools in Phase Two. However, the city’s public high schools will receive a complete update. Manchester West, Central and Memorial High Schools will remain at their existing locations, with Career and Technical studies offered at the Manchester School of Technology distributed among Central and Memorial, with a Magnet School for the Arts joining the general studies program at West. Central in particular will be completely rebuilt, either on its current campus or at an alternative location not mentioned in the agenda materials for next week’s Board of School Committee meeting. Plans for both potential rebuilt Central High Schools are projected at five stories tall, with the option remaining at the current campus removing existing underground parking. Memorial would also be rebuilt on its current campus along the edge of Weston Road, with parking and athletic fields placed at the current location of the school building. Central’s design and construction would take place from 2026 to 2033, followed by Memorial (2033-2040) and West (2040-2047). The current Manchester School of Technology building would be transformed into potential central offices for the district, a special needs school for Grades 5-12, transportation offices, adult education services. This transformation would take place only after conclusion of the Central and Memorial plans. Costs for the elementary school proposals in Phase 2 range from $852 to $894 million. The high school cost will range from $1.365 to $1.433 billion. Manchester School District Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Chmiel released the following statement on the information set to be presented at next week’s meeting. “We are looking forward to bringing our roadmap for the long-term facilities planning to the Board of School Committee on Monday, December 9th. This roadmap is the result of months of work between the district, community and our expert consultants, SMMA. We have approached this work with a respect for studies of the past along with changes in educational practices to better align the district with 21st Century learning. The recommendations contained within this long-term roadmap can serve as a guide to help both current and future city leaders plan for and invest in our District school buildings, which benefits our city as a whole. This is not an “everything right now” plan, rather it is a staggered 25-30 year guide for our school facilities, serving multiple generations and ensuring we are constantly moving forward while investing in our facilities. We fully understand the ongoing need to work to identify funding options and strategies for this roadmap to ensure the level of affordability needed for the greater community. Our primary focus at this time continues to be the Priority One projects – specifically the previously approved additions and renovations of the four middle schools and construction of the new Beech Street elementary school.” A full copy of the presentation can be found below.

With the holidays taking up much of your time, you may not be concentrating on retirement moves to make before 2025. But if you’re the type of person who does everything to the max, investing in your future retirement now could be a game changer. Contribution limits In 2024, you can invest up to $23,000 into your 401(k) retirement plan as per IRS contribution limits. If you’re over 50 and need to play catch-up, you can invest an extra $7,500. That means your total possible contribution for 2024 is $30,500. If that seems like a lot, it is. But you don’t have to max out your contributions if you can’t afford it. Employer matching can help. In 2025, you can invest $23,500, bringing your possible contribution up to $31,500. If you’re over 50, the catch-up contribution remains at $7,500 for 2025. But a huge change was made in SECURE 2.0 for employees aged 60 to 63 who participate in workplace retirement plans. Starting in 2025, this super catch-up contribution limit is $11,250 instead of $7,500. People are also reading... Adobe Stock Four ways to max out 1. Figure out how much you contributed. If you’ve contributed as much as possible for the year, you’re in good shape going into 2025. If you’re not sure, you changed jobs or haven’t contributed consistently in 2024, you still have time to make adjustments to max out your 401(k) contributions for the year. 2. Check your employer’s match. Employer matching is a job benefit not to be overlooked. After all, for every dollar you save in your 401(k), your employer matches your contributions dollar-for-dollar or offers a partial match up to a certain percentage of your wages. Knowing where you stand can help you make the most of this opportunity. For example, let’s say you earn $50,000 per year and contribute $3,000 to your 401(k), or 6% of your salary. If your employer offers to match 50 cents of each dollar you contribute up to 6% of your pay, they would add $1,500 each year to your 401(k) account, boosting your total annual contributions to $4,500. 3. Look at your budget. Maxing out your 401(k) is always a good move. However, retirement planning can be a balancing act; sometimes, your budget is downright against it. If you have high debt or no money set aside for emergencies, you may want to hold off a bit. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t contribute to your retirement plan at all. Maintaining contributions is important, even if it means not maxing it out. Still, if you wait too long to save, you’ll have to play catch-up. Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts If you save too much, you may have to tap into your account early, which can mean early withdrawal penalties if you are under age 591⁄2. 4. Boost your contributions. If you have enough cash stashed away to cover a large lump sum contribution to your 401(k), you could max out your 401(k) contributions before the end of the year. You can do this by increasing the percentage you contribute monthly from your paycheck. You’ll want to speak with your employer or HR department to see if this is possible and fill out the necessary paperwork. Keep in mind that how often you increase it or even if you can will depend on your plan rules. You may also want to check to be sure your contributions are still automatic. Since it’s usually easier to save money if it’s automatically deducted from your paycheck, it may be worth reviewing your budget to see if you can boost your contribution amount to max out your 401(k). If you haven’t set up automatic payroll contributions, now is a good time to do so. 1 in 4 people say they’ll go into debt for the holidays. Is social media to blame? Benefits of maxing out Maxing out your 401(k) has some clear benefits. This is especially true if you’ve fallen behind on your savings goals or you simply want to grow your retirement nest egg faster. The main advantage is that you’ll have more money saved for retirement. According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2024 Planning & Progress Study, most retired Americans believe they will need nearly $1.5 million in the bank to retire comfortably. That’s a 15% increase — which far outpaces the 3% to 5% inflation rate — over 2023 and is up 53% from 2020. The money you put into your 401(k) lowers how much you’ll pay in taxes for the year, which may put you in a lower tax bracket. Also, 401(k) investments grow tax-deferred, so you won't pay taxes on the money until you withdraw the funds in retirement. If you have a Roth 401(k), you don't get a tax break on contributions because you fund your account with after-tax dollars. But the money you contribute grows tax-free and you won’t pay any taxes on your withdrawals in retirement. Speak with a pro Maxing out your 410(k) each year may not be enough to retire comfortably, but it is a great start. That’s why enlisting the help of a financial adviser in 2024 can help you get a head start on 2025 and a happy retirement down the road. 4 tips to help you experience exceptional cruise dining | PennyWise podcast You need to make $108,000 to afford a home in America Americans who bought homes in 2024 were older and richer than ever Why you shouldn't store your money in payment apps Be the first to know

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck was carried off on a stretcher with what seemed to be a severe ankle injury near the end of his team's loss to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday. It leaves last season's Champions League runner-up without any fit central defenders. Schlotterbeck headed narrowly over the bar in the last action of the game as Dortmund lost 3-2 to Barcelona. He landed heavily and appeared to be in severe pain. The referee blew for full time while Schlotterbeck was being treated and he was later carried off on a stretcher, covering his face with his hands. Coach Nuri Sahin said Schlotterbeck was “obviously in low spirits” after the injury. “I'm waiting for the diagnosis and then we'll see, but I've watched the footage, too, and it doesn't look so good,” he told broadcaster DAZN. Dortmund already had to partner Schlotterbeck with midfielder Emre Can in the center of defense for the game because of injuries to Niklas Süle, who is expected to be out for several months with an ankle injury, and Waldemar Anton, who has not played since Nov. 30 with a reported muscle tear. Dortmund is sixth in the Bundesliga and plays Hoffenheim on Sunday before facing Wolfsburg on Dec. 22 in its last game before the winter break. AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerSony’s PS5 Slim is being discounted well below its normal price as an early Black Friday deal over at Amazon. If you don’t already own a PS5 and you aren’t keen on paying the higher $699 price for the Pro model, this is a deal that’s too good to pass up. Normally the PS5 Slim costs $499.99 at its full retail price. However, Amazon has it discounted for an early Black Friday deal that brings the price down to just $424. This is the lowest we’ve ever seen the PS5 Slim since Sony launched it. Additionally, it’s the all-time low price for this model according to price tracking data from Camel Camel Camel. And that right there is a good enough reason to buy one at this price if you haven’t upgraded from your PS4 yet. The PS5 Slim is essentially the same as the PS5 save for a few details. For starters, it supports a removable disc drive. This is also the model that comes with the disc drive. While you’re likely to be using the disc drive for physical games pretty often if you’re buying this model, it’s nice that you can remove it if you ever want to tuck it into a smaller space. The console also comes with a 1TB SSD and a DualSense controller. In addition, you’ll get the necessary cables for HDMI and power to get everything up and running. Which means you’ll be ready to play games in no time. However, the vertical stand is sold separately. So if you want that, it’s not part of this deal that Amazon is offering. Another nice thing about the PS5 Slim is that it has slightly more storage for games than the original model. Plus, you can still add an NVMe SSD to the expansion slot if 1TB isn’t enough for you. Firefighters and passengers hurt after train hits fire truck on crossingThe Miami Dolphins head into this critical matchup against the Cleveland Browns with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. If the Denver Broncos defeat the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dolphins will be eliminated from playoff contention before stepping onto the field against the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, the Dolphins’ starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, is now listed as doubtful for the game, and he is unlikely to play if Miami’s postseason aspirations deplete. Run The Ball Despite these setbacks, the Dolphins have a clear path to victory. With Tua on the sidelines, the team will need to lean on their run game—something that showed significant improvement in the previous week following the return of offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn . Wynn’s presence in the offensive line has provided added stability and paved the way for the Dolphins’ rushing attack to gain traction. Running backs Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane will be pivotal in this matchup as Miami looks to control the clock and dictate the tempo on the ground. The run game will need to be effective early to set up manageable third downs and take some pressure off Tyler Huntley . Containing Jerome Ford Cleveland’s running back, Jerome Ford, has been a key part of their offensive success this season, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. The Dolphins’ defense must stop him. Miami’s front seven must take a physical approach to limit Ford’s explosive potential. By containing Ford and forcing the Browns into obvious passing situations, Miami can begin to exploit Cleveland’s weaknesses, including its reliance on backup quarterbacks. Jordyn Brooks’s designation for this game will be critical to the Dolphins’ ability to stop the run. Start Fast and Force the Browns to Throw Miami’s defense will need to hit the ground running. Establishing an early lead would be key in forcing Cleveland’s offense to move away from the run game and rely on their quarterbacks. Whether it’s Jameis Winston or Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center for the Browns, both have been prone to mistakes when pressured. Winston, despite his strong arm, is still a turnover risk with his inconsistent decision-making. Thompson-Robinson, the second-year player, has shown flashes of talent but remains raw, and a fast start could force him into making many errors. By forcing the Browns to play catch-up, Miami’s defense can leverage these mistakes, setting the stage for key takeaways. The Importance of the Pass Rush To force mistakes, the Dolphins’ pass rush will need to be relentless. Miami has one of the most dynamic defensive lines in the league, and this is the time for the defensive front to shine. Whether it’s sending pressure from the outside with Chop Robinson or sending interior rushers like Sieler, getting to the quarterback will be essential. Disrupting the Browns’ quarterbacks—especially a quarterback like Thompson-Robinson—will increase the likelihood of forced throws and bad decisions. The Dolphins’ secondary, led by Kendall Fuller and Jalen Ramsey , will have the opportunity to capitalize on those mistakes with potential turnovers. Conclusion Despite the uncertainty surrounding Tua Tagovailoa’s availability, the Dolphins can still find a way to secure a victory against the Cleveland Browns by focusing on their run game, containing Jerome Ford, and putting pressure on the Browns’ quarterbacks. Miami can stay alive in the playoff hunt by starting fast, forcing Cleveland to throw, and generating turnovers with a strong pass rush (barring a Denver victory). This is a must-win game, and the Dolphins have the talent to rise to the occasion. This article first appeared on Dolphins Talk and was syndicated with permission.Smith asks to drop cases

New Delhi: Some industry experts are skeptical whether Elon Musk’s unconventional methods and Donald Trump’s leadership will ultimately benefit AI regulation and the market at large, according to a new report. Trump has been re-elected as President of the US with Musk appointed to lead the newly established Department of Efficiency. Musk’s role focuses on streamlining government processes and integrating advanced technologies, a development that marks a significant shift in the regulatory landscape for artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. However, some industry experts remain skeptical, said GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. According to forecasts, the global AI market is set to reach over $1 trillion by 2030, up from $103 billion in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39 per cent over the period. Kamilla Kan, senior data scientist, Medical Devices team at GlobalData, said that with the increasing adoption of AI across sectors, the need for robust, forward-thinking regulations is more critical than ever. “AI technologies are becoming integral to a range of industries, and we expect this trend to accelerate globally in the coming years. However, it remains uncertain whether Musk’s approach will truly enable the responsible growth of AI or if it may inadvertently create regulatory gaps that could hinder the technology’s safe and ethical integration,” Kan emphasised. Musk’s efficiency-focused mandate includes developing frameworks aimed at streamlining AI compliance while fostering innovation, though there is uncertainty about how effective his approach will be in practice. His appointment reflects the government’s intention to strengthen the US position in AI and technology, which are now viewed as critical for economic growth and national security. Musk’s Department of Efficiency is expected to provide some regulatory consistency and clear guidelines to help businesses harness AI responsibly. However, concerns remain about whether this approach will adequately balance public trust with the rapid demands of technological advancement, said the report. This Samsung Refrigerator With The AI Family Hub Is Now Priced Down to $2,210 From $4,999 For Black Fridayjiliko mx

Your positive attitude from June onwards, assists you in expressing your ideas, planning, and negotiating your environment, potentially with a new car on the agenda. There could be teething problems in June new situations ease in. You need to make allowances for unforeseen complications then, when time is wasted and communications are fuzzy. There are some damaged associations, and you'll need to work your way through a few problems. The dual nature of influences, affecting Gemini's career path and life direction, is set to change in a stepped manner during 2025, leading to a better position and improved pay, particularly from mid-year. November is great for career advancement. You're keen and excited about exploring life through foreign or educational adventures that accompanies your growing independence and curiosity for life. Your goals are changing as you are keen to taste life's offerings and the friendships that they bring. There may be work associated with travel during July to October, or studies in health, hygiene, and nutrition. Whilst you're leaving behind the responsibilities, complications, and pressures of career, you'll need to give more structure to your goals and friendship considerations following August. Changes to the way Cancerians think and go about life are indicated in the coming year, as old ways are discarded, and illusions dissipate. You feel as if you have a new lease on life, with optimism powering the way from June onwards. You're also determined to establish financial control in your own life, part of which involves working diligently on your chosen career path and creating opportunities for success through education, foreign connections, and legal avenues. Whilst you have good backing for doing so, it is important not to stray far from conventions and good ethics. There is the potential for overseas travel and education on your path, but it is also important not to take risks with money or misjudge situations as these can set you back. July to October brings advancements with key interests. Exercise caution in June. The lack of support from those in a position above, including employers, seems to fall away gradually during 2025, promoting a more certain life path and improvements in work opportunities and outcomes. These changes are associated with a change in pay and reorganisation of your financial management, either indicating a new job or new position. There are benefits received through partnerships and because of your own efforts, bringing both a livelier social life and improved relationships with coworkers or people you meet in the course of your daily business. Ties are strengthened during March, April, July, and August through October, although there may be some confusion or uncertainty during June 9-August 24. November brings professional advancement and economic reward. Virgo's changing perspective of themselves and the world influences their relationships with others. Your dreams are large, especially from June onwards, when you'll be motivated to improve family conditions, and are able to do so. Whilst November sees the realisation of some objectives, June brings disorganisation and a need for care, especially with money. During March to October, you'll need to be more vigilant in protecting your assets; between May and November, you'll be taking a more conservative approach with money. Both trends become more ingrained in 2026. Influencing your attitude is restructuring at work during July to October. Whilst your efforts are financially rewarded, adaptations are necessary. Other considerations include greater independence and flexibility, as well as health, both of which can be accommodated. Romance, marriage, work, travel, and education are all important for Libran folk during 2025. There are changes ahead to do with employment. These moves eventually lead to greater financial stability and excellent opportunities to advance along the path you have envisioned for yourself, where you will shine. Foreign travel and education offer exciting potentials, which you will undoubtedly pursue over the next few years, with a first taste of the offerings during July to October. You tend to become more cautious in all relationships, where things will move slowly or have a fated quality to them. At the same time, there may also be confusion in your dealings with people, as trust issues are involved. Whilst there is a need for passion in your life, you need to find the right balance and establish trust before making a commitment. Scorpio's determination is directed towards home and property matters during 2025, with significant steps taken during June to October. Unexpected factors will aid you on the financial side of things during August 11-October 28, whilst a steady supply of work and manual investment into property makes a difference during July and August. From May 2025, opportunity enables you to earn good money in association with increased responsibilities, although this can be tiring, especially during June 9 to August 24. However, work also can be enjoyable. Better attention paid to diet and health interests will not only assist you in managing your daily life but will also be a source of enjoyment. Overseas travel, education, and legal interests are favoured from June, although June itself is a time of disorganisation. The scene is set for changes to living conditions and career during 2025 as you seek more ideal conditions within the home and better pay. Whilst these changes are stepped, taking stronger root in 2026, you'll also find that the variable and unsettling conditions, associated with work and health, are less influential during July to November, and continuing from 2025 onwards. However, your increased restlessness and taste for adventure can also shakeup relationships then. You do desire stability in your love life and are willing to commit but there needs to be enough flex room to be able to do your own thing. Aspects during July to October make this possible but discussion and joint efforts are needed to usher in more ideal conditions. November brings positive and expansionary conditions in the home. Capricorn's daily routines are set to change in 2025 as restraints are lifted and you're able to turn your attention to domestic, family, and property interests, where you'll be investing more of your time, personal effort, and money, especially during July to October. This period is also important for income and work, with restructuring of these activities giving you greater control over your income as well as more flexibility and independence in your work: something that becomes a feature over the coming years. You'll be financially rewarded for these personal efforts. June onwards, for twelve months, brings wonderful conditions for marriage, meeting people, and foreign travel. However, June can see you briefly confused and disorganised, with increased domestic responsibilities. Take care with decisions then. Aquarians are coming into their own during 2025, more confident in themselves and what they want, and more influential in the circles in which they move. You are seeking to enjoy life more, doing the things you love, and are susceptible to the charms of love: life will be kind. You are also seeking greater stability, whether in your domestic circumstances or in your love life, even though change is on the agenda. March and April are important in stabilising living conditions whilst July-August brings steadiness in love. You are also restructuring your routines around these changes, particularly during July to October, reflecting changing attitudes towards life. You do seem to breeze through life, with better pay and work coming easily to you, as you enjoy improved health and good working conditions. The difficulties and confusion that have marred Pisces' personal life for some time are set to change as part of a shakeup in 2025. How you feel about yourself is changing as is your perspective on relationships and income. Illusions evaporate and personal burdens associated with restructuring your life are alleviated. The emphasis of goals switches to income generation, which may result in a new position within your current employment or job. Whilst you may need to trim expenses, you will certainly find the time to enjoy life, romance, creative interests, and children, especially from June onwards. Your domestic situation appears to be unsettled during July 7-November 8 as you endeavour to create a more ideal environment. A practical approach and your readiness for change promotes stability. Iberdrola completes $2.5 billion acquisition of CMP parent companyIsrael detains the director of one of northern Gaza's last functioning hospitals, Palestinians say DEIR AL BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza's Health Ministry says Israel’s army has detained the director of one of northern Gaza's last functioning hospitals. The announcement on Saturday came after health officials said Israeli troops stormed the hospital on Friday and forced many staff and patients outside and told them to strip in winter weather. Israel’s army didn’t respond to questions about the hospital director. It denied it had entered or set fire to the complex but acknowledged it had ordered people outside. It said it was conducting operations against Hamas in the area. The military repeated claims that Hamas militants operate inside Kamal Adwan Hospital, which officials there have denied. Israeli airstrikes hit a Yemen airport as a jet with hundreds onboard was landing, UN official says UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The top U.N. humanitarian official in Yemen says Israeli airstrikes hit Yemen’s main airport as a civilian Airbus 320 with hundreds of passengers on board was landing this week. He says a U.N. delegation led by the head of the World Health Organization was waiting to leave on Thursday as two Israeli airstrikes hit the airport in the capital of Sanaa. Julien Harneis told U.N. reporters on Friday that the most frightening thing about the airstrikes wasn’t the effect on him and about 15 others in the VIP lounge at the international airport. Rather, it was the destruction of the airport control tower as a Yemenia Airways plane was taxiing in after touching down. Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes office President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to pause the potential TikTok ban from going into effect until his administration can pursue a “political resolution” to the issue. Trump's request Friday came as TikTok and the Biden administration filed opposing briefs to the court. Oral arguments are scheduled for Jan. 10 on whether the law, which requires TikTok to divest from its China-based parent company or face a ban, unlawfully restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The brief said Trump opposes banning TikTok at this junction and “seeks the ability to resolve the issues at hand through political means once he takes office.” Bloodied Ukrainian troops risk losing more hard-won land in Kursk to Russia KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Five months after their shock offensive into Russia, Ukrainian troops are bloodied by daily combat losses and demoralized by the rising risk of defeat in Kursk. Some want to stay in the region at all costs. Others question the value of having gone in at all. Battles are so intense that commanders are unable to evacuate their dead. Lags in communication and poorly timed operations have cost lives and commanders say they have little way to counterattack. The overstretched Ukrainians have lost more then 40% of the territory they won in the lightning incursion that seized much of Kursk in August. US to send $1.25 billion in weapons to Ukraine, pushing to get aid out before Biden leaves office WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the United States is expected to announce it will send another $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. It's part of a push by the Biden administration to get as much aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving office on Jan. 20. Officials say the large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds. The officials say they expect the announcement will be made on Monday. They spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public. An online debate over foreign workers in tech shows tensions in Trump's political coalition WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in the president-elect’s political movement into public display. The argument previews fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare tensions between the newest flank of Trump’s movement — that is, wealthy members of the tech world who want more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump’s Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. Canadian Cabinet ministers meet with Trump's nominee for commerce secretary in bid to avoid tariffs TORONTO (AP) — Two top Canadian Cabinet ministers have met with President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary at Mar-a-Lago as Canada tries to avoid sweeping tariffs when Trump takes office. New Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, as well as North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department. The meeting was a follow up to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last month. Trump has threatened to impose sweeping tariffs if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States. Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who instituted economic reforms, cremated in New Delhi NEW DELHI (AP) — Manmohan Singh, the former Indian prime minister widely regarded as the architect of the country’s economic reform program, has been cremated after a state funeral. The veteran leader, who was also credited for a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, died late Thursday at age 92. Singh’s body was taken Saturday to the headquarters of his Congress party in New Delhi, where party leaders and activists paid tributes to him and chanted “Manmohan Singh lives forever.” Later, his body was transported to a crematorium ground for his last rites as soldiers beat drums. A mild-mannered technocrat, Singh was prime minister for 10 years until 2014. Winning ticket for $1.22 billion lottery jackpot sold in California, Mega Millions says ATLANTA (AP) — At least one Mega Millions player has plenty of dough to ring in the New Year after drawing the winning number. After three months without anyone winning the top prize in the lottery, a ticket worth an estimated $1.22 billion was sold in California for the drawing Friday night. The winning ticket matched the white balls 3, 7, 37, 49, 55 and the gold Mega Ball 6. The identity of the winner or winners was not immediately known. The estimated jackpot was the fifth-highest ever for Mega Millions. The total amount of the jackpot would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Nearly all grand prize winners opt to take a cash payout, which for Friday night’s drawing is an estimated $549.7 million. A 9th telecoms firm has been hit by a massive Chinese espionage campaign, the White House says WASHINGTON (AP) — A top White House official says a ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans. Administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies, as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, a deputy national security adviser, said Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks.Back in time

Pep Guardiola has insisted he will "not give up" in his attempts to oversee a turnaround in Manchester City 's fortunes after their draw with Everton left the club with one win from their last 13 games in all competitions. City's 1-1 home draw with Everton on Boxing Day left them down in seventh place, five points off the top four and 14 adrift of leaders Liverpool , who have a game in hand. The 53-year-old, who signed a two-year contract extension last month, said frustration over poor results has not affected his desire to steer City back to their previous top form. "I will not give up. I want to do it. And with the situations that we have, we have to do it," Guardiola said after Thursday's match. "Of course I want it. Everybody wants it. I don't want to disappoint my people, in terms of the club, in terms of the fans, or the people who love this club." Guardiola said his team's shocking run of results, the worst stretch in his mostly glittering managerial career, has helped him realise how good they were on their run of winning an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles. "That makes me remember how good was the past," he said. "That's the truth, that has made me realise now what we have done, because sometimes you have injuries, and how many years we were incredibly, incredibly consistent. "But, yeah, you expect a little bit down. We didn't expect [this] much, and the main reason is having seven, eight important injured players. "But I see the team, the spirit in training, how focused they are. And we saw [progress in Saturday's] game, we saw it, but unfortunately we could not get the result that we wanted." Guardiola shook his head when asked whether his team's slump had made him even more determined to please people. "It has been since the arrival of my career as a football player, as a manager, I think every one of us in our job wants to please the people, we want to do good our jobs. That is undeniable. That is not a question mark, I would say." If City are to right the ship, the next few weeks could be the best time to do it. Travel advisory for Syria: https://t.co/bOnSP3tS03 pic.twitter.com/zg1AH7n6RB — Randhir Jaiswal (@MEAIndia) December 6, 2024 WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SYRIA - AND HOW BAD IS THE SITUATION Syria is in the midst of a political turmoil, with the Russia and Iran-backed Bashar Al-Assad regime finding itself surrounded by rebel groups and militias which are backed by Turkey. Rebel forces have, over the last week, pressed a lightning offensive across Syria aiming to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. The Islamist-led rebels were at the gates of Syria's Homs, a war monitor told news agency AFP. Several other Syrian cities have fallen out of government control - some without even a bullet having to be fired. The offensive by the Islamist rebels have been so swift, that Syria's second city Aleppo and strategically located Hama have already fallen from President Bashar al-Assad's control. This has happened for the first time since the civil war began in 2011. Bashar al-Assad's clan has ruled Syria for the past five decades, but for the first time ever, it has looked truly vulnerable to a total collapse. Should the rebels capture Homs, it would cut the seat of power in the capital Damascus from the Mediterranean coast, a key bastion of Bashar Assad. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor, by Friday morning (local time), the Islamist rebels were less than five kilometres from the edge of Homs. WHO IS BEHIND THIS - AND WHAT IS HIS PAST Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or HTS rebel alliance, has categorically said that the goal of this offensive is to overthrow Bashar al-Assad and end his rule in Syria. "When we talk about objectives, the goal of the revolution remains the overthrow of this regime. It is our right to use all available means to achieve that goal," Jolani told CNN in an interview. The Islamist rebel alliance conducting the offensive that began on November 27 is led by HTS, which stems from the Syrian branch of the Al Qaeda, but has sought to moderate its image in recent times. Abu Mohammed al-Jolani is also known as the 'blue-eyed boy' of ISIS terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Several years ago, he was kept at the infamous US detention facility in Iraq. But al-Jolani, once written-off as a lost cause by the US, has emerged from the shadows. He now finds himself as a power figure in Syria. Interestingly, the Islamist rebels launched their offensive in Syria the same day a ceasefire took effect in the war between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah, which along with Russia and Iran have been firm backers of the Bashar al-Assad government. SYRIA'S FATE HANGS IN THE BALANCE Turkey, which has extended its full support to the rebels, said on Friday that its Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan shall be meeting his Russian and Iranian counterparts this weekend in Qatar for an emergency discussion on the situation in Syria. Meanwhile, the political wing of the HTS-led rebel coalition has reportedly reached out to Russia and China to support them in their "struggle for liberation" from the decades-old Syrian regime headed by Bashar al-Assad. They have reportedly informed Moscow and Beijing that they would like to officially establish diplomatic ties with both countries. The foreign ministers of Iran, Iraq, and Syria also met on Friday in Baghdad to discuss the goings-on in Syria. Russia, which is heavily invested in the war in Ukraine, has not yet revealed how it is reading this situation and what its next step will be, but Moscow has hinted for providing limited support to the Bashar Assad regime to defend itself against the rebels.
