No, it wasn’t Santa Claus. It was someone even more legendary: a postman. We couldn’t remember the last time we’d been visited by, or even seen, a real postman, a species distinct from the ubiquitous couriers. Along with gramophones, black-and-white TVs, and other relics, postmen have disappeared from our lives as though they’d never existed, having been vanished by a wave of the magical wand of digital technology, of laptops, and emails, and smartphones. The postman brought us a Christmas card from friends in London, Roopa and Dan. Like postmen, greetings cards, Christmas or any other, have been dematerialised, banished by the same digitised wizardry as postmen, being replaced by computer-generated graphics and emojis. When Bunny and I lived in Calcutta, every Yuletide season we’d hang up the Christmas and New Year cards we’d get from distant friends and relations, who in turn would get the cards we’d send out in an unbreakable tradition. We’d decide which charitable cause card we’d get – CRY, or HelpAge, or the World Wildlife Fund – and draw up a list of all those we’d send them to. Then there were the postage stamps to be got, from the Park Street post office. We knew the postal rates for the cards to be delivered within the country, but the postage for the ones meant for foreign shores had to be ascertained from the post office. The envelopes for the cards being sent abroad would carefully have to be marked CARD ONLY and BY AIR MAIL, to which PAR AVION would be added if we wanted to sound French, to obviate the possibility of their being shipped off by sea to arrive at their destination in the middle of next summer. The postman’s visit vividly brought all this back to us. The card wasn’t the only thing the postman gave us. He also gave us the gift of memory of times long past. The Madden altcast will be streamed on Peacock with the main broadcast airing on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. It is the first time NBC has done an alternate broadcast of an NFL game. CBS has done at least one game on Nickelodeon since the 2020 season, while ESPN/ABC have the “ManningCast” as well as animated presentations featuring “ The Simpsons ” and “ Toy Story .” Amazon Prime Video also has “Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats” during “Thursday Night Football.” “It’s ironic that you want to make the video game as much as actual live play as possible and now you are doing the opposite of trying to make the real game look like the video game,” said Josh Helmrich, the NFL's senior director of media and Next Gen Stats. We’re coming up on the last Saturday of November, which, for me, has always been the very best time of the college football season. As exhilarating as the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. As blissful as baseball’s Opening Day. As can’t-miss as the Sundays of all the golf majors rolled into one. In college football, Rivalry Week — all those storied, magical matchups in the enchanted afterglow of Thanksgiving — is everything. Sorry, make that “was” everything. The all-consuming College Football Playoff has rendered Rivalry Week impotent, at least compared with what it used to be. In my football “bucket list”-style book that was published in 2017, there’s a chapter on all the greatest college rivalries, most of whose annual games were reserved for the last Saturday of November. By the way, I really should pause here and thank the 14 of you who bought and read the thing. But the book — and in particular that chapter — was written, as it turns out, by a total rube. Consider this passage on rivalries, which might as well have been written 25 or 50 years earlier: “They go together not like oil and water, but rather like leaking gas and an open flame. Football’s best rivalries explode with emotion and physical play on the field, and with opposing loyalties off it. Yet they also fit together like pieces of a beautiful puzzle, neither side truly whole without the other.” It’s as if this was written in a different lifetime, which, come to think of it, it was; the book was cobbled together during the summer and fall of 2016 as the Cubs were working toward winning a World Series for the first time since, well, you remember. But the College Football Playoff already existed, albeit in the four-team model that lasted through last season. And I thought even then that the four-team playoff sucked too much oxygen from the proverbial room, minimizing rivalry games, all non-playoff bowl games and various other traditions. Still, Rivalry Week held its singular allure as the apex of the season, at least from my point of view. Now, though, with the playoff having been expanded to 12 teams? You’re either in it or you’re irrelevant. Your next game either impacts the list of 12 or why even bother? And even a so-called rivalry game that will indeed affect whom the playoff committee selects and whom it doesn’t really matters only in terms of the playoff itself; the rivalry part has been reduced to, at best, a bonus feature. College football has bailed on so much of what made it unique, first and foremost that the regular season was more important than the postseason. While other sports and leagues focused on determining one champion, college football had its own day of the week and its own sense of regular-season pomp and pageantry. That’s in the past, underscored by the recent six-year, $7.8 billion agreement between the CFP and ESPN, whose exclusive rights to televise playoff games completely informs its coverage from August to January. On Friday, Minnesota and Wisconsin will renew the most-played rivalry in the top division of college football, the FBS. This will be game No. 133, with Wisconsin holding the slightest series edge of 63-62-8. The winning team will run from goalpost to goalpost with Paul Bunyan’s Axe and mimic chopping them down. It’ll be quaint. The sports world won’t give a damn. Also that day, Mississippi State and Ole Miss — historically a hateful rivalry — will square off in the annual Egg Bowl, and Georgia Tech and Georgia will play the game actually nicknamed “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.” Ole Miss fell out of playoff contention last week, reducing interest in its game to locals and gamblers (who’d bet on a competition between a fire hydrant and a tuna casserole) only. Saturday should be college football’s day of the year. The Iron Bowl (Alabama and Auburn), the Palmetto Bowl (Clemson and South Carolina), the Territorial Cup (Arizona and Arizona State), the Old Oaken Bucket game (Indiana and Purdue). Of course, the blessed battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh (Notre Dame and USC). By God, the best rivalry of ’em all as I see it — The Game (Michigan and Ohio State). Yeah, yeah, the “Hat” game as well. We’ll let Illinois and Northwestern fans play along, too. But Saturdays anymore are for playoff implications only. That’s every Saturday of the season, including this one. Maybe that’s how you like it? The expansion of the playoff was a pretty dang popular thing, broadly speaking. It could be I’m not only a rube but a dinosaur.As snow blankets the Colorado mountains, outdoor enthusiasts have a unique opportunity: the winter hut trip. Located between Telluride and Silverton near the top of Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains, the Opus Hut was built for backcountry skiers, mountaineers, hikers and mountain bikers. At 11,700 feet, the hut sits at treeline with low-angle glades below and open slopes above. While intermediate powder skiing is available out the back door of the hut, owner Travis Mohrman said the terrain is best suited for experienced backcountry skiers. Mohrman estimates that 15% to 20% of the groups visiting Opus Hut do so with guides. “They’re not personally comfortable with the terrain or they’re not from the area,” Mohrman said. “They guides are knowledgeable about local conditions — what the snow is, what’s safe and what’s not safe.” The cabin accommodates up to 20 people in five rooms. Some visitors book the whole hut and bring friends and family, while others reserve available beds in unbooked rooms. The hut features solar-powered lighting and 110-volt outlets for charging electronic devices. It also has filtered drinking water, hot and cold tap water, and indoor composting toilets. It provides full bedding and clean sleeping bag liners. During winter, the hut has four to six employees who sleep in a separate cabin. They prepare meals with natural, organic, and, when possible, locally grown products. The hut accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets–just be sure to inform the staff beforehand. It also offers beer, wine, and a limited selection of spirits for purchase. “You can travel much lighter if you don’t have to bring in your food,” said Mohrman, who took over the hut three years ago. “You don’t have to focus on the upkeep of being in the backcountry.” Reservations for Opus Hut open Aug. 1. “The winter fills up quick,” Mohrman said. “Every winter weekend books in the first five minutes.” Nestled at 11,200 feet in the San Juan National Forest, Campfire Ranch Red Mountain Pass is the perfect base for exploring world-class skiing, split boarding, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Located between Silverton and Ouray, it’s is accessible during the winter via a half-mile backcountry over-snow approach. Campfire Ranch is an ideal choice for novices. While other Colorado hut systems require you to carry your own food, bring sleeping bags, and live off-grid, this one provides food service, solar-powered electricity, Wi-Fi, and bedding. The dog-friendly cabin accommodates eight people. “We took a hospitality approach to remove barriers to entry for people who want to have the experience but don’t have the gear or the knowledge,” said Katrin Meiusi, director of marketing for the properties. Campfire Ranch first opened a campground on the Taylor River in Almont near Crested Butte. RVs are not permitted at the campground, which is open from May to October. Amenities include unlimited firewood, clean bathrooms, and drinkable well water. The 38 backcountry huts managed by the non-profit 10th Mountain Division Hut Association are connected by 350 miles of trails among some of the tallest peaks in the lower 48 states. All huts, some of which accommodate up to 17 people, have kitchens with propane burners for cooking — propane is provided. They provide pots, pans, potholders, dishware, cooking and eating utensils, a percolator or French press for coffee, salt and pepper, paper towels, dish soap, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and trash bags. Some huts have ovens and propane grills. All huts provide lighting from on-site solar power, propane or a generator. A few huts also have outlets for charging small devices such as phones. The huts have either an outhouse or an indoor bathroom with toilet paper supplied. All huts include mattresses and pillows, but you must bring your sleeping bag and pillowcase. Summit Hut Association operates five backcountry huts open for winter from November to May. Francie’s and Janet’s cabins are also open for summer use from July to September. All huts have solar-powered lights, fully stocked kitchens, and wood-burning stoves. Francie’s, Janet’s, and Sisters’ cabins have saunas and indoor toilets. The association hosts its annual Backcountry Ball fundraiser in October at The Maggie on Peak to kick off the season. The event includes dinner, drinks, a silent auction and entertainment. Proceeds help maintain the network of backcountry cabins.NBC Sports makes its first foray into doing an NFL alternate broadcast on Saturday when it puts the matchup between the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs into the realm of the Madden video game universe. The Madden altcast will be streamed on Peacock with the main broadcast airing on NBC, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. It is the first time NBC has done an alternate broadcast of an NFL game. CBS has done at least one game on Nickelodeon since the 2020 season, while ESPN/ABC have the “ManningCast” as well as animated presentations featuring “ The Simpsons ” and “ Toy Story .” Amazon Prime Video also has “Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats” during “Thursday Night Football.” “It’s ironic that you want to make the video game as much as actual live play as possible and now you are doing the opposite of trying to make the real game look like the video game,” said Josh Helmrich, the NFL's senior director of media and Next Gen Stats. The altcast on Peacock will blend video game elements — such as Madden 25 graphics, route trees, player cards, button icons on eligible receivers and player ratings — with live action. GenuisIQ will provide real-time data via the league’s Next Gen Stats. There will also be times when animations from the video game — such as touchdown celebrations — will be used instead of live action. NBC has used the “Sunday Night Football” games the last two weeks as test broadcasts to make sure all the technology was working as well as build cohesion in the studio in Stamford, Connecticut, with the announcers doing the game. Paul Burmeister will handle the play-by-play with Madden NFL expert Kurt Benkert and six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Ochocinco providing commentary. Ochocinco will serve as a real-time player “ratings adjuster.” Henry Leverette, who won the Ultimate Madden Bowl championship ring in February, will also be part of the broadcast. Burmeister noted earlier this week that there will be more hard core football schematic chess match talk on the altcast compared to what might happen on a traditional football broadcast. Story continues below video “I’m really excited to toe that line and weave this in to show how much parallel the game has to the real game itself,” Benkert said. “I think will resonate really well with the younger audience and with people that are used to seeing it in the video game that way.” While the Madden video game is known for the high camera view above the quarterback, that will be used only for replays or to show formations before plays. The traditional sideline camera will be used the most since that better shows route trees and other features most associated with the game. In an added twist, Ochocinco will be able to adjust a player's rating depending on what happens during the game. The Texans (9-5) have clinched the AFC South while the AFC West champion Chiefs (13-1) are looking to remain the conference's top seed. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were two of only six players to begin the season with 99 overall ratings in the Madden game. Houston's highest-rated players in Madden are offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (95) and running back Joe Mixon (93). Eleven players on the Texans and Chiefs rosters have a Madden rating above 90. The Madden altcast also takes on personal meaning for NBC Sports Executive Producer of NFL Fred Gaudelli, who was Madden's producer during the final seven years of his broadcast career. Madden joined ABC's “Monday Night Football” in 2002 before Madden and Gaudelli moved to NBC for the start of “Sunday Night Football” in 2006. “The one thing John held fast is you couldn't put something in the video game that you couldn't do in a real game,” Gaudelli said. “I had some memorable times picking his brain about the advent of the video game and what led him to it.
