Phillip, File) A bankruptcy judge on Monday ordered a new hearing in conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' effort to stop the satirical news outlet The Onion from buying Infowars and turning it into a parody. Jones alleges fraud and collusion marred the bankruptcy auction in which The Onion was named the winning bidder on Nov. 14 over a company affiliated with him. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez had been scheduled to hear an emergency motion to disqualify The Onion's bid, but decided to put it off until either Dec. 9 or Dec. 17. That's also when the judge will hear arguments on a request to approve the sale of Infowars to The Onion. Lopez said similar arguments are being made in both requests. Lopez could ultimately allow The Onion to move forward with its purchase, order a new auction or name the other bidder as the winner. At stake is whether Jones gets to stay at Infowars’ studio in Austin, Texas, under a new owner friendly to him, or whether he gets kicked out by The Onion. The other bidder, First United American Companies, runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements. Regardless, Jones has set up a new studio, websites and social media accounts that would allow him to keep airing his show. And his personal account with 3.3 million followers on the social platform X was not part of the sale, although Lopez will be deciding whether it should be included in the liquidation and sold off later. In a new court filing Monday, lawyers for X objected to any sale of the accounts of both Jones and Infowars, saying X is the owner of the accounts and that it has not given consent for them to be sold or transferred. Jones has praised X owner Elon Musk on his show and suggested that Musk should buy Infowars. Musk has not responded publicly to that suggestion and was not among the bidders. Jones' bankruptcy and the liquidation of his assets came about after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion to relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Jones was found liable for defamation and emotional distress damages in lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas for repeatedly calling the 2012 shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators a hoax staged by actors to increase gun control. Proceeds from the liquidation are to go to Jones' creditors, including the Sandy Hook families who sued him. Jones alleges The Onion’s bid was the result of fraud and collusion involving many of those families, the humor site and a court-appointed trustee who is overseeing the liquidation. First United American Companies submitted a $3.5 million sealed bid, while The Onion offered $1.75 million in cash. But The Onion's bid also included a pledge by Sandy Hook families to forgo some or all of the auction proceeds due to them to give other creditors a total of $100,000 more than they would receive under other bids. The trustee, Christopher Murray, said that made The Onion's proposal better for creditors and he named it the winning bid. He has denied any wrongdoing. Jones and First United American Companies claimed that the bid violated Lopez’s rules for the auction by including multiple entities and lacking a valid dollar amount. Jones also alleged Murray improperly canceled an expected round of live bidding and only selected from among the sealed bids that were submitted. Jones called the auction “rigged” and a “fraud” on his show, which airs on the Infowars website, radio stations and Jones' X account. He filed a counter lawsuit last week against Murray, The Onion's parent company and the Sandy Hook families in the bankruptcy court. In a court filing on Sunday, Murray called the allegations a “desperate attempt” to delay the sale of Infowars to The Onion and accused Jones, his lawyers and attorneys for First United American Companies of a “vicious smear campaign lobbing patently false accusations.” He also alleges Jones collaborated with First United American Companies to try to buy Infowars. Lopez’s September order on the auction procedures made a live bidding round optional. And it gave broad authority to Murray to conduct the sale, including the power to reject any bid, no matter how high, that was “contrary to the best interests” of Jones, his company and their creditors. But at a Nov. 14 hearing Lopez said he was concerned about the process and transparency. “We’re all going to an evidentiary hearing and I’m going to figure out exactly what happened,” he said. “No one should feel comfortable with the results of this auction.” The assets of Infowars' parent company, Free Speech Systems, that were up for sale included the Austin studio, Infowars' video archive, video production equipment, product trademarks, and Infowars' websites and social media accounts. Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights, but has acknowledged that the school shooting happened . Jones has brought in millions of dollars a year in revenue by hawking nutritional supplements, clothing, survival gear and other merchandise, including more than $22 million this year through Sept. 30 from his Infowars Store website, according to court documents. Senate rules previously set guidelines for senators to consider when evaluating potential conflicts of interest. But the rules did not explicitly require senators to sit out votes on those matters. The updated rules state that a senator "is precluded" from voting on legislation when his or her personal interest in it is "so substantial as to affect the senator's independent legislative judgment." "When that is the case, we feel it's appropriate that member of the body not vote," said Senate President Rod Bray, R-Martinsville. The new conflict of interest rule, similar to the old one , allows a senator with a conflict to still participate in committee and floor debate on the legislation, so long as the senator openly discloses his or her conflict prior to speaking. Senators may also continue to request an opinion from the Senate Ethics Committee to determine whether a potential conflict of interest is sufficiently substantial as to require the senator to sit out a vote, according to the rules. The Senate's updated conflict of interest rule more closely aligns with the longstanding Indiana House rule that specifies any representative with a direct personal or pecuniary interest "shall" ask to be excused on any vote related to that interest — except the state budget or general revenue legislation. "Any member requesting to be excused from voting may make a brief statement of the reasons for making such request and the question then shall be taken without further debate," according to the House rules. In general, both state senators and state representatives are expected to vote on every question that comes up when they are physically present in their chamber at the Statehouse and not otherwise ineligible to vote due to a conflict of interest or another excuse permitted by the Senate or House rules. The four-month regular session of the Indiana General Assembly is set to begin Jan. 8 when the 100 representatives and 50 senators return to Indianapolis focused primarily on devising a new, two-year state budget, while also potentially tackling property tax reform, education policy, health care costs, and gambling expansion, among other issues.

The software company behind Starbucks' payment and scheduling system has been experiencing a dayslong ransomware attack, causing outages that are disrupting employee pay. The attack on Blue Yonder, the company that makes the software, began on November 21 and has caused outages in Starbucks's system for tracking employee hours and payments. According to documents reviewed by Business Insider, Starbucks has issued guidance to its employees about how to handle pay disruptions caused by the Blue Yonder outage. Starbucks told its employees that payment for the period ending on November 17 would be unaffected, but there may be discrepancies in the following pay period. "We will ensure partners who receive less than their worked hours or intended sick and/or vacation time will be paid correctly, as soon as possible," the internal documents read. The outage has forced employees to track their shifts using pens and paper, according to Bloomberg. The documents viewed by BI indicate that employees who are missing pay from their checks should notify their store managers as soon as possible. Any underpayment will be resolved in the next pay period. Any payment overages resulting from an employee being paid for a scheduled shift from November 18 through November 24 that they did not report to work for will not be required to be paid back, the documents say. A Starbucks partner in the South said their manager told them on Monday that employees who had paid time off planned for the affected weeks won't be paid for that time until the outage has been fixed. That's "potentially very bad for some partners taking vacation around the holidays," the partner told Business Insider. A spokesperson for Starbucks told Business Insider that the company is working to ensure its partners are paid for their hours worked with limited disruption, and indicated the outage has not disrupted customer-facing technology or service in any of its locations. Blue Yonder's software is also used by major grocery store chains and Fortune 500 firms, reported. Similar cyber attacks have previously left companies like and across America using pen and paper for administrative tasks and sales transactions. "Blue Yonder experienced disruptions to its managed services hosted environment, which was determined to be the result of a ransomware incident," a spokesperson for the company told Business Insider in a statement. "Since learning of the incident, the Blue Yonder team has been working diligently together with external cybersecurity firms to make progress in their recovery process. We have implemented several defensive and forensic protocols." 2024 was definitely the year of the bitcoin: The first bitcoin spot ETFs were approved in the US, the cryptocurrency reached an all-time high , and the fourth bitcoin halving occurred in April. The price of bitcoin now sits at over $84,000, up 142 per cent since the start of the year and 60 per cent since Donald Trump was elected as US president on 5 November. With the digital currency’s market capitalisation reaching a whopping $2.1 trillion (£1.7 trillion), it seems like the bubble can only keep growing. But where do analysts expect bitcoin to go next year? By far the most important catalyst for bitcoin’s rapid growth this year has been the election of Trump in November . “With the incoming Trump administration, we see this as a positive catalyst for the crypto industry and crypto/blockchain assets,” said Pieran Maru, fund manager at Liontrust. Many analysts are expecting a complete overhaul of the US government’s attitude to crypto under the new president, and for clear reasons. In the past, Trump described the digital currency’s value as “based on thin air” and claimed that bitcoin was “a scam”. However, he has since done a U-turn on his views, and on the campaign trail, pledged to make the US “the crypto capital of the planet”. With the nomination of crypto advocate Paul Atkins as the chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the US is likely to bring in favourable regulatory environment, as well as greater clarity around crypto rules. Meanwhile, whispers of a strategic bitcoin reserve have been circulating round Washington, which could massively boost the price of crypto and show that the US government backs it. With plans for central bank digital currencies seemingly abandoned by central banks across the world, a further potential headwind for bitcoin has been eliminated. “The growing integration of Bitcoin into mainstream finance through spot ETFs and institutional adoption suggests it could consolidate its position as a legitimate asset class,” noted John Plassard, senior investment specialist at Mirabaud Group. With the introduction of spot bitcoin ETFs in the US, it has provided an easier path for investors, especially institutional investors like pension funds and banks, to gain exposure to the digital currency. Spot ETFs hold around 1.1m bitcoin, representing just under six per cent of current supply. Blackrock recently highlighted in their Investment Institute paper that “giving bitcoin a one per cent to two per cent weighting would produce a similar share of profile risk as the Magnificent Seven tech stocks in a standard 60/40 portfolio”. Regulators also seem to be softening on bitcoin across the world. While the US SEC will likely soon be as pro-crypto as they come, even the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK has been taking a slightly less negative stance towards the asset. “Today, with Bitcoin touching $106,000 and Tesla up 77 per cent since 5 November, there is a bandwagon feel, like so many previous momentum moves,” said Richard de Lisle, manager of the VT De Lisle America Fund. So what will cause a peak in bitcoin? Well, while analysts agree this extreme upwards momentum can’t last long, the sharp drop-off that cryptocurrency has suffered many times before might still be a way off. “Bitcoin has a unique HODL culture,” explained Maru, referring to the ‘hold at all costs’ meme that circulates in crypto spaces. “Given Bitcoin’s inherent scarcity, with a cap of 21 million coins, and considered a store of value like gold, it is no surprise that more than 60 per cent of Bitcoin held has not been sold in the last 12 months,” he added. Another clear phenomenon after the US presidential election has been the bifurcation of bitcoin and gold. The two are both asset classes “with no real function apart from being a store of value”, said de Lisle, with “one for the new world and one from the old world”. While the two had been closely correlated in the run-up to the US election, now it seems as if bitcoin has begun to more closely follow the Magnificent Seven, particularly Tesla. “Looking at past moves, nothing lasts a year once escape velocity is reached except those things that turn out to be real,” added de Lisle. “Thus you might want to get out of Bitcoin next year while considering if it is just an interim peak such as in 2017 or 2021. And for that, there is a great divide of opinion between younger and older investors.”
