super mega five Sean 'Diddy' Combs cannot be trusted to follow the rules he has proposed for himself as part of a US$50-million bail package, a prosecutor said on Friday, in urging a judge to keep the music mogul in the Brooklyn jail where he has been held for 10 weeks ahead of his May 5, 2025 trial on sex-trafficking charges. Combs' lawyers this month proposed a bail package backed by his US$48-million Florida mansion. It also called for Combs to be monitored around the clock by security personnel, subjected to home detention, and to have no contact with alleged victims or witnesses. At a hearing before U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian in Manhattan, prosecutor Christine Slavik said even from behind bars at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Combs had communicated with his lawyers through unauthorized channels, and sought to run a social-media campaign to sway potential jurors. "The defendant here has demonstrated that either he cannot or will not follow rules," Slavik said. "The defendant, simply put, cannot be trusted." Combs' lawyers were expected to respond later in the hearing. Upon being led into the hearing by members of the U.S. Marshals service, Combs, wearing a beige jail-issued outfit, blew kisses toward his family seated in the second row of the courtroom's audience. Combs has been denied bail three times since his arrest, with multiple judges citing a risk he might tamper with witnesses. The rapper and producer pleaded not guilty on Sept. 17 to charges that he used his business empire, including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment, to sexually abuse women. Combs denies wrongdoing Prosecutors said the abuse included having women take part in recorded sexual performances called "freak offs" with male sex workers who were sometimes transported across state lines. Combs, 55, has denied wrongdoing, and his lawyers have argued the sexual activity described by prosecutors was consensual. Combs' lawyers questioned why jail was needed when federal prosecutors in Brooklyn last month allowed the pre-trial release on a $10-million bond of former Abercrombie and Fitch ANF.N CEO Mike Jeffries, who has pleaded not guilty to sex-trafficking. "There is no legal basis for continuing to force Mr. Combs to prepare for trial from jail," his lawyers wrote in a Thursday court filing. The U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan, which brought the charges against Combs, countered that Jeffries is 80 years old with no criminal history, whereas Combs has prior arrests. They also said federal agents recovered rifles with defaced serial numbers from Combs' residences, and that Combs contacted witnesses through third parties from jail and tried to hide those communications from law enforcement. Defence lawyers, meanwhile, said new evidence shed light on a 2016 hotel surveillance video of Combs assaulting former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, known as Cassie, and undermined part of the prosecution's justification for detaining him. His lawyers said the video was not proof of a coerced "freak off" as prosecutors alleged, but rather a glimpse into a complex romantic relationship. This week, Subramanian ordered prosecutors to destroy their copies of handwritten notes that Combs took in jail, pending a decision on whether they were subject to attorney-client privilege. Stocks closed higher on Wall Street as the market posted its fifth straight gain and the Dow Jones Industrial Average notched another record high. The S&P 500 rose 0.3%. The benchmark index’s 1.7% gain for the week erased most of its loss from last week. The Dow rose 1% as it nudged past its most recent high set last week, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2%. Markets have been volatile over the last few weeks, losing ground in the runup to elections in November, then surging following Donald Trump's victory, before falling again. The S&P 500 has been steadily rising throughout this week to within close range of its record. It's now within about 0.5% of its all-time high set last week. “Overall, market behavior has normalized following an intense few weeks,” said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, in a statement. Several retailers jumped after giving Wall Street encouraging financial updates. Gap soared 12.8% after handily beating analysts' third-quarter earnings and revenue expectations, while raising its own revenue forecast for the year. Discount retailer Ross Stores rose 2.2% after raising its earnings forecast for the year. EchoStar fell 2.8% after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. Smaller company stocks had some of the biggest gains. The Russell 2000 index rose 1.8%. A majority of stocks in the S&P 500 gained ground, but those gains were kept in check by slumps for several big technology companies. Nvidia fell 3.2%. Its pricey valuation makes it among the heaviest influences on whether the broader market gains or loses ground. Retailers remained a big focus for investors this week amid close scrutiny on consumer spending habits headed into the holiday shopping season. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, reported a quarter of strong sales and gave investors an encouraging financial forecast. Target, though, reported weaker earnings than analysts' expected and its forecast disappointed Wall Street. Consumer spending has fueled economic growth, despite a persistent squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. Inflation has been easing and the Federal Reserve has started trimming its benchmark interest rates. That is likely to help relieve pressure on consumers, but any major shift in spending could prompt the Fed to reassess its path ahead on interest rates. Also, any big reversals on the rate of inflation could curtail spending. Consumer sentiment remains strong, according to the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. The survey also showed that consumers' inflation expectations for the year ahead fell slightly to 2.6%, which is the lowest reading since December of 2020. Mr Sorrapong also clarified points raised by the Stock Exchange of Thailand regarding the company's third-quarter financial statements, saying every investment decision is carefully evaluated for risk and long-term value. "RML reaffirms that all operations adhere to legal and regulatory requirements and emphasise that the investments pose no negative impact on its financial standing," he said. RML has allocated pre-development funds to support a new mixed-use project scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of 2025. All of these things serve as triggers for those who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. For many, the holidays may also bring about more family/relationship conflicts (or loneliness for those who have lost loved ones) and subsequently the desire for increased or resumed substance abuse. We certainly can’t totally avoid the holiday season. This time is ultimately meant to be enjoyed. But, there are things everyone can do to reduce holiday stress. It’s also important to recognize your own triggers and limit them. Take care of your basic needs first. Be sure to eat well and get plenty of rest, fresh air and exercise. Try to avoid prolonged time with individuals who cause stress or in unhealthy environments. If you struggle with substance abuse, be prepared to decline invitations to consume alcohol at a social gathering. It’s also acceptable to decline an invitation to attend a social event entirely. Your peace of mind and stability are most important. Plan ahead to deal with tempting situations. If you are hosting a party, be sure to offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Never questions why a person chooses not to drink alcohol or try to push him/her to just have one drink. Alcohol is not a requirement for celebrations. Choose healthy new habits and opportunities to meet new friends; try new activities to limit temptation and the desire to engage in unhealthy habits. For many, meditation and mindfulness practices are helpful to fight the cravings of substance abuse. Striving to keep your mind calm during the hectic holiday season should be a daily habit for everyone, whether you are managing addictions or not. Finally, if you are fortunate not to have a substance abuse problem during the holiday season, keep an eye out for your friends, family members and co-workers who may be having difficulty at this time of year. Your support and kindness can go a long way to help him/her deal with daily stress. From 2017-19, Mansfield faced then Kelley-Rex rival King Philip in the regular season only to then face them in the postseason. The Hornets fared better in each of those matchups the second time around. Redding is hoping that pattern holds. “You definitely learn some stuff the first time around. Teams evolve a bit also over the course of the postseason,” Redding said. “I remember experiencing it with King Philip well and faring better on the scoreboard the second time in each occurrence. I think we’re able to adjust.” The Hornets are led by their ground game of Sean McCoy and Mason Bordieri. McCoy has 15 touchdowns. Quarterback Tommy Vallett has improved as the season has gone on with the junior completing over 75 percent of his passes the second half of the season.
