roulette rules As the end of the college football season approaches, many teams are beginning to eye which bowl they will be playing in. It also marks the time when coaches that have not met expectations are being fired. The list of fired coaches is already long and growing, likely to be in line with the number of coaches who changed schools or positions in 2023. The schools affected included several from the Bowl Championship Series. Mack Brown, the University of North Carolina coach, was let go on Nov. 26. His record of 44-33 over six seasons during his most recent tenure at North Carolina was respectable. He also took his team to bowl games every season, though his 1-4 record in these games was less than stellar. Neal Brown, the West Virginia Mountaineers coach, was let go on Dec. 1. His record of 37-35 over six seasons, with three bowl game appearances (and a 2-1 record), was insufficient to keep his job. Speculations on his successor abound, with former Mountaineer coach Rich Rodriguez certainly in the mix. Ryan Walters, the Purdue Boilermakers coach, was also let go on Dec. 1. His record of 5-19 over just two seasons, including season-ending embarrassing losses to Notre Dame and Indiana, likely played into his dismissal. Before feeling sorry for these men, they will all receive handsome buyouts. Neal Brown will walk away with nearly $10 million. Walters will take home over $9 million. Mack Brown will receive a rather modest $2.8 million. What gets forgotten at these times are the students who had developed close ties to these men. Given how the transfer portal functions, many will look for a new school next season, possibly following their fired coach to his new home. This benefited Indiana this season, when first-year coach Curt Cignetti was able to attract several of his best players from James Madison University where he previously coached. There are a number of issues that should be addressed when coaches are fired and paid ridiculous amounts of money for not coaching. These figures not only top faculty salaries, they are well over the salaries earned by every university president and chancellor. The UNC chancellor, Lee Roberts, takes home around $600,000. Gordon Gee, the chancellor of West Virginia University, has a base salary of $800,000. Mung Chiang, president of Purdue, has a salary over $600,000. Yet none of these high-ranking university official salaries come close to the buyouts for the dismissed coaches. It is common knowledge that big-time college sports involve big-time money. That is why the major television networks pay billions of dollars for the rights to broadcast high profile games involving teams in high profile conferences. So who will pay for these buyouts? The simple answer is all of us. Television contracts are paid for by advertisers. The cost of these advertisements is recouped in the products and services that we purchase. People who never watch a football game are paying for some of these buyouts. When buyouts, let alone salaries paid to employed coaches, become excessive, one must begin to question whether the “tail is (inappropriately) wagging the dog?” Athletic departments often argue that they are self-sustaining, not using general university funds targeted for education. Research suggests that this is not the case. Athletic departments also argue that college sports build school spirit and alumni engagement. The question is at what price are such benefits accrued. Without revenue sports like football and basketball, the professional leagues would need to spend a significant amount of money to build minor league systems to keep their talent pipelines stocked. Names, Images and Likeness (NIL) endorsements have made these revenue sports into minor league feeder systems. Some college students are now earning millions of dollars for being a student and playing on the school team. Of course, such high-profile athletes are the exception, not the rule, with most student-athletes earning a few thousand dollars. What has become clear is that in high profile revenue sports, student athletics are no longer about students. They are about a financial arms-race that has driven coach salaries and performance expectations ever higher. When Ryan Day, the Ohio State football coach lost to Michigan for the fourth consecutive year, speculation about his dismissal abounded. Fortunately, he was given a vote of confidence by the institution. Nearly every school would welcome him on their sidelines if Ohio State was foolish enough to listen to their vocal fans and fire him, given his 66-10 record since 2018 and five top-10 rankings in the final Coaches and AP polls. Athletics has a place on college campuses. Yet the financial optics tarnish its image. Most turn a blind eye, hoping to win this financial athletic arms race with national championships. Yet with only one national champion crowned each year, nearly all schools end up disappointed, except perhaps the coaches who end up being let go. India’s former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh remains a remarkable figure in the nation's history. Despite enduring relentless criticism from the Left, he will be celebrated by history as the visionary economist who steered India away from economic collapse in 1991 and paved its path to global prominence. New Delhi: There is an irony in the way history treats its architects. The unassuming figures, often ridiculed or ignored in their time, are the ones who quietly lay the foundations of transformative change. Dr Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister, stands as a towering example. While his critics from the Left took relentless potshots at him, history will undoubtedly recognise him as the economic architect who saved India from the brink of economic collapse in 1991 and charted its course toward global prominence. The disdain Dr Singh faced from the Left is no secret. Their deep suspicion of liberal economic policies made him an easy target. For them, Dr Singh epitomised everything they opposed — a reformist who embraced market liberalisation, advocated for reduced state intervention, and empowered the private sector. But their antagonism went beyond economic reforms. Their fierce opposition to the India-US nuclear deal during Dr Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister revealed the depths of their ideological rigidity and unwillingness to adapt to a changing world order. The crisis that defined a leader The early 1990s marked one of the darkest periods in India’s economic history. With foreign reserves depleting to perilous levels and the nation teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, India’s economy was in free fall. The Nehruvian socialist model of centralised planning and heavy state control, which the Left continued to champion, had led to stagnation and inefficiency. India needed a lifeline, and that lifeline came in the form of reforms spearheaded by Dr Singh, then Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Dr Singh’s economic reforms — summarised as liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation — were a bold departure from decades of economic orthodoxy. The Indian economy was opened to foreign investments, import restrictions were eased, and monopolistic state control over critical sectors was dismantled. The Left branded these measures as “a betrayal of India’s socialist ideals,” ignoring the harsh reality that without these reforms, India would have descended deeper into poverty and economic irrelevance. Their failure to propose credible alternatives exposed the hollowness of their rhetoric. India-US nuclear deal The Left’s contradictions were further highlighted during Dr Singh’s second term as Prime Minister. Their vehement opposition to the India-US nuclear deal was not just short-sighted but also detrimental to India’s long-term strategic interests. The deal, which ended India’s decades-long nuclear isolation, was a diplomatic masterstroke. It ensured India access to critical nuclear technology and fuel, boosting energy security and strengthening its global standing. But the Left saw it as an “infringement on India’s sovereignty”, framing it as a “capitulation to US interests”. Their obstructionist stance brought the government to the brink of collapse in 2008, with the Left withdrawing support in protest. Yet, Dr Singh’s resolve remained unshaken. He famously stated, “I would rather risk my government than my country’s future.” This bold stance not only secured the deal but also demonstrated his commitment to India’s strategic autonomy. A legacy of humility and vision Under Dr Manmohan Singh’s leadership, India’s economy witnessed unprecedented growth, even weathering the global financial crisis of 2008 with resilience. Landmark initiatives such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information Act showcased his commitment to inclusive development. The Left may continue to criticise Dr Singh, but history has already rendered its verdict. Whether it was his transformative economic reforms or his determined pursuit of the nuclear deal, Dr Singh’s actions were guided by a vision for a stronger, self-reliant India. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The plan for the Minnesota Vikings was to bring in Sam Darnold as the bridge between Kirk Cousins and J.J. McCarthy, confident his strong arm and starting experience would sufficiently run a high-caliber offense until the rookie was deemed ready to play. Darnold's performance to date has been much closer to superstar than mere stopgap. “He’s a baller," Vikings safety Harrison Smith said. "He can make stuff happen when he needs to. I know with the outside narrative on him and his path and everything, you might not think that, but ever since he got here, it felt like that was going to happen.” Having led the Vikings (10-2) to their fifth consecutive victory with the go-ahead touchdown pass against Arizona last week, one game after a stellar overtime drive to beat Chicago , Darnold has become one of the darlings of this NFL this season with his success in coach Kevin O'Connell's system after the third overall pick in the 2018 draft started his career in rather bleak fashion. His first year in Minnesota sure has been smoother than what Cousins has gone through in his debut with the Atlanta Falcons . Last week in a loss at home to the Los Angeles Chargers, Cousins matched his career high with four interceptions. “I don’t think anybody can put any more pressure on Kirk than he has for himself. He’s carried us through this season when we were figuring out a lot of things on defense,” Falcons defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. “He’s just having a hard time right now. There’s nothing to say he can’t catch fire and light it up like he’s been doing.” The Falcons (6-6) take their three-game losing streak on the road to face the Vikings, with division races for both teams in full swing. The quarterback contrasts have made this matchup all the more intriguing, with Cousins coming back to the place where he spent the previous six seasons. Cousins has a $25 million salary cap hit this season, the 11th-highest among quarterbacks in the league. Even if the Falcons were to move on in 2026 and swallow the dead money for two more years with eighth overall pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings, Cousins will carry a $40 million charge in 2025. Conor McGregor has lost his civil rape case in Ireland after a jury found him liable for assault. The case had been going on for much of the month. Nikita Ni Lamhain, a woman from Ireland , claimed McGregor and another man had sex with her against her will after a Christmas party in 2018. Ni Lamhain, who is also known as Nikita Hand, alleged the UFC star picked her and her friend up following the holiday get-together and took them to a nearby hotel. She claimed while there, McGregor forced himself on her on a bed in a penthouse suite. She also stated that later, another man, James Lawrence, sexually assaulted her too. McGregor claimed their encounter was entirely consensual. However, this decision confirms that the court did not believe his recounting of events. They awarded Ni Lamhain with $250,000 in damages. Their report also stated that James Lawrence did not assault her. The media approached for McGregor for comment outside of the courthouse, but he did not make any statements there.
